An alternative to smoking, vaporizers have been around in various forms since the 1960s, but have only recently caught on in popular culture. Combining new (and some old) tech while providing a healthier alternative to enjoying marijuana, the hype behind vaporizers is not overblown. Here’s why.
What Is “Vaping”?
Vaporizers heat any herbal material—tobacco, marijuana—to a certain temperature until it forms a light mist, which you then inhale. They come in desktop sizes or battery-powered portable ones, which are proving very popular with younger generations. These are known as Vape Pens. Vape Pens vary in price, and good ones typically run between $80-$200.
Though the iconic Volcano vaporizer is often what comes to mind when people first hear the word, the technology and implementations of vaping continue to be applied in a variety of forms. As popularity grows, it seems that innovation around this popular consumption method will continue to flourish.
Compared to smoking, vaping is much healthier for you. Your body doesn’t love it when you light things on fire and then suck them into your lungs. Studies show that marijuana vaporizers provide the same level of THC, but fewer toxins. The same study notes that vaping is less bad for you than smoking. In many states that have legalized medical marijuana, they encourage users to vape or eat marijuana as an alternative to smoking. In New York, they’ve disallowed smoking altogether, largely for health reasons.
It’s Officially a Word
The word “vape” became so prevalent in popular culture and language that it was named Oxford English Dictionary’s Word of the Year, meaning “to inhale and exhale the vapour produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device.” According to OED, you are about 30 times more likely to come across the word vape—both a verb and a noun—now than only two years ago. We only expect this trend to keep growing.
Portable, Easy to Use
At its core, the technology for vaporizers is simple, but stylish. All vaporizers have a power source, coils that heat and vape the ingredients, and an LED light at the tip. Portable vaporizers are super customizable and incredibly discreet, as they leave little smell and residue behind. If you’re looking for a new way to consume your favourite plant, a vaporizer might be for you. Check out some of our reviews to narrow down the options.
While Vaporizers and e-cigs are catching like wildfire amongst tobacco and marijuana lovers, the law is still trying to play catch up. Regulating vaporizers has lead to the creation of vaporium communities for users to buy and inhale vapors. New York has just cracked down on vapors by including them in their Public Smoking ban laws.
As vaporizers continue to become the norm in the cannabis community, we expect the technology will become even more widely used. However, laws are expected try to regulate this method. But as legalization spreads, vaping obviously stands out as a healthier alternative to smoking—something we can all get on board with. Hopefully lawmakers and officials will agree too!
