Famous athletes and weed are hot topics in the news today. In February 2009, Michael Phelps apologized for a photo. Phelps called the infamous bong pic: “regrettable behaviour.” He continued to apologize by saying “I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way…it will not happen again.” Kellogg Co. dropped him despite his apology.
Since this time, Phelps has been charged with a D.U.I twice and received an 18 month suspended sentence. He tweeted an apology in 2014 saying “I am deeply sorry to everyone I let down.” These sound a little similar to me. Inhaling some ganja and drinking and driving are the same now? Come on Phelps. You’re making cannabis look bad.
This article isn’t about Phelps. It’s about the athletes that got it right. Great quotes by great athletes who tell the truth about their relationship with marijuana.
Top 3 Athletes that Told the Truth About Their Weed Use:
3. Ricky Williams – Football
Ricky Williams was an 11-year veteran of NFL. He had a very tumultuous relationship with marijuana, the media, and the NFL. He had a string of violations throughout his decorated professional career. The situation came to a head when he tested positive three times in 2006. He was suspended by the NFL and played the year in the CFL for the Toronto Argonauts. Coaches and commentators were baffled. Interviewers pressed Williams for the reason why he put his career in jeopardy. Ricky didn’t apologize.
“I got high and forgot I wasn’t supposed to get high.” He responded.
Williams wasn’t done there. In 2013, he was asked if weed kept him from reaching his full potential. He replied: “I don’t agree that it was an Achilles heel, I kind of think of it was more like spinach for Popeye.”
2. Bill “Spaceman” Lee – Baseball
This legendary left-handed pitcher was known as the “Yankee Killer”. In the 1960s, this charismatic personality ruled Boston baseball. To this day, he boasts that whenever he returns there he is well received and doesn’t pay for a single drink. Things weren’t always good for the Spaceman. He found himself in hot water with Commissioner Bowie Kuhn for his honest comments about marijuana.
“I told reporters that I sprinkled marijuana on my organic buckwheat pancakes, and then when I ran my five miles to the ballpark, it made me impervious to the bus fumes. That’s when Bowie Kuhn took me off his Christmas list.”
Lee told the truth about his life and the public loved him for it. He continued to do so even after he retired. Saying in an interview “The other day, they asked me about mandatory drug testing. I said I believed in drug testing a long time ago. All through the ‘60s, I tested everything.”
1. Matt Riddle – MMA
This exciting MMA fighter was released by the UFC in 2013 when he tested positive marijuana metabolites. Riddle, who holds a medical marijuana certificate in the state of Nevada, was shocked by UFC’s actions.
“There’s not much I can do. I was prescribed my medicine and I’m going to take it. I got fired over taking my medicine because I don’t want to take pharmaceutical drugs or testosterone… It does bother me, for some reason the UFC hates people that smoke weed. The whole MMA industry for some reason hates people that smoke marijuana. I don’t know why, I keep to myself for the most part. I smoke weed and I fight. Usually I put on exciting fights or I dominate people, I always go out there and fight. It’s stupid that I got fired over a plant, but other people think it’s stupid that I just won’t stop smoking. I quit three weeks before my fight and this is what works for me. If you were me or lived with me you’d understand.”
