If you are anything like me, you probably cringe every time you see someone being wasteful with any part of the marijuana plant. This is especially true if you have ever been involved with growing marijuana plants – discarding anything is like throwing your child to the side of the road. What about the stems? – you might ask. Fortunately, there are plenty of uses for your leftover cannabis stems.

Save the Stems: Methods for Extracting THC and Fun From Your Cannabis Stems

Make a cannabis cocktail

This is a quick method that you can use to make an alcohol-based tincture with your cannabis stems—also known as Green Dragon. Once your collection of stems has filled a mason jar, you’ll know you are ready. Then you will need to get the strongest grain alcohol you can find. Everclear is a popular choice using this method. Once you have secured the booze, pour it into your stem jar, filling it to the top. Most people suggest leaving the jar in a cool dark place, perhaps a cupboard. Shaking the jar daily is a must. After a week of letting the stems soak, the alcohol will draw all the remaining THC from the stems, creating marijuana infused alcohol tincture.  Pour the solution through a strainer to remove all plant matter and enjoy.

Time for tea

If you are looking for a non-alcoholic option for extracting the THC from your cannabis stems, making some tea is the answer for you. First you should gather your stems and cut them lengthwise, so that the white center is exposed. Then boil enough water to fill your pitcher. (Remember the more stems you have the more water you can use) Pour the boiling water over the sliced stems in a pitcher. You can also include a bag of tea or some lemon in this concoction if you would like to add flavor. Allow the pitcher to steep for 24 hours then pour through a strainer to remove plant matter. This tea pairs well with these cannabis doughnuts.

THC butter

Making THC butter with your cannabis stems is very similar to making it with trim or flower. You need a lot of stems in order to pull this method off with any noticeable results, but if you for some reason have a lot of stems hanging around, give this a try. Grind your stems, perhaps using a magic bullet or food processor is best for stems. Take the grounds and put them in a saucepan with butter on simmer for 45 minutes. Stir often. Once the stems have turned a brownish color you can turn off the heat and strain the melted butter to remove plant matter. The liquid butter solution can be used immediately or stored in the fridge for use later.

Use the stems to express your canna-art side

If cooking is not your thing, but you still have a bunch of cannabis stems that you don’t know what to do with—consider making art with them. Just like marijuana inspired artist Dan Cretu, who recreates famous images using marijuana buds, you can create sculptures, jewelry, or woven items. You will notice that your cannabis stems are durable especially when they are fresh. This makes them perfect for weaving things like baskets or bracelets.  You can also glue the stems to a canvas to create rustic images.

Do not hate on stems

You should not expect to experience the same highs from cannabis stem recipes as you do from eating marijuana edibles. There is just not enough THC found in stems to produce the same results. However, most recipes say that using stems will produce a pain relieving effect that is felt through a mild body buzz. Saving your stems is a good idea, even if you think you will never use them. Think about experimenting with some of the methods above the next time you find yourself struggling to close the lid to your overflowing stem jar.
