The most common way dabs are made today is through the extraction process of the plant material itself. This is done with the use of solvents (generally butane, as it is cheap and readily available) but this comes at the chance of a household fire or explosion and is not recommended for those who are not professionals with professional equipment.
There is, however, a much easier method of extracting your resins (essential plant oils/hash) from the cannabis plant without using these products.
Cheap and easier method of extracting the dab
A solventless method of extracting dabs that you can do at home is cheap and easy and can be done with a few household items. All a person needs is hair straighteners, some parchment paper, and their choice marijuana strains to extract from. Simply insert a nugget of marijuana in the parchment paper and fold it in half around the nugget.
Setting your hair straightener to a medium-low heat, place the nugget and folded paper between and press down for 5 seconds. Once you’ve done this you will see a small yield of solventless oil on the inside of the parchment paper, and can repeat this process 2 or 3 times to get more from each small nugget you heat.
This process of extraction is known as the rosin technique. Rosin will be a pure concentrate of your plants medicinal properties, having a sweeter taste, and more potent effect in smaller dosages. Using the heating iron you can also produce hash oils from marijuana keif and refine your bubble hash into a more liquid, dabbable form.
The return of oil on a small nugget will yield a 7-10% rosin oil in your parchment paper and will take several nuggets to yield a lot of resin, but 7-10% percent of oil should be enough for one to two fairly decent dabs.
The effect of rosin, like all concentrates, will be much cleaner than just smoking, where changes in heat of the nugget itself produce more carbon based poisons that are consumed by open flame. Therefore, rosin, is a quicker way to getting to the point of high you want to achieve and is much healthier than smoking.
Be warned though, inexperienced users may not be as ready as experienced users who know that onset may creep up on them after 10 to 15 minutes, and these are incredible highs compared to just smoking.
Producing larger amounts of solventless oil
To produce larger amounts of solventless oils you would simply need a larger flattening press like a t-shirt printing press or some kind of industrial-sized iron.
High Times has even had some very savvy rosin makers place in Cannabis Cup competitions as the technique is fast and easy, beyond that of dangerous extraction solvents, and a few days wait time on purging off the chemicals from a finished product.
