Musicians often branch into other areas of business. Some develop clothing or makeup lines while others choose to create shoe-empires. Rappers like Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg, however, chose to leave their legacies behind in a different way entirely. These innovative artists took to the greenhouse and designed unique strains of cannabis, sure to give fans the high of their life.
Strains like Satellite OG, Girl Scout Cookies, and Jody Highroller all have their roots in the rap industry. These powerful strains were created specifically to give the heaviest smokers in the game a truly satisfying buzz. Many of these name-brand buds have even gone on to place at the Cannabis Cup, making them some of the most sought after herbs on the market. Enjoy a joint, while burning through these eight rappers who developed their own strains.
1. Snoop Dogg
It should come as no surprise that the Doggfather has his own strain, but it might be mind-blowing to learn he’s actually created eight strains in all. This classic cannabis smoker fittingly named one of his highly-rated indica strains Snoop Dogg OG, a tangy mixture of Lemon OG and Sour Diesel. Another is entitled Snoop’s Dream, a hybrid mixture of Blue dream and Master Kush.
This Taylor Gang member also belongs to another group, the Cookie Family, a force to be reckoned with in the cannabis world. This secret society is responsible for creating the wildly popular Girl Scout Cookies strain, the preferred herb for creating glorious moonrocks. Some other creations include Cherry Kush, Pink Panties, and Sherbet.
3. Wiz Khalifa
With friends like Berner by his side, it’s no wonder Wiz has a constant stream of the finest herb. Just enjoying cannabis wasn’t enough for this Pittsburgh-born entrepreneur, of course, he had to develop his own ultra-exclusive strain, Khalifa Kush. The real Khalifa Kush is a heady hybrid, and is not available to the public, though some dispensaries are selling buds under this name.
4. RiFF RaFF
If there’s one thing RiFF RaFF is known for it’s being over-the-top in everything he does. So, of course, while visiting Black Rose Collective in California, it wasn’t enough for RaFF to simply smoke, he also had to rename a strain, which has exquisitely purple buds, to Jody Highroller. Black Rose sells five grams from $55, ensuring all fans have access to this mid-level masterpiece.
5. Paul Wall
This Houston-based rapper created Satellite OG, an indica strain with an almost euphoric high. The long-lasting buzz leaves smokers with a heavy, full-body high while minds remain clear and active. A piney, skunky aroma signifies the potency of this powerful strain.
6. Freddie Gibbs
Freddie Gibbs was a hands-on creator when it came to designing his strain, Freddie Kane. Working with California-based Loompa Farms, Gibbs was able to gain a unique perspective on the cultivation process and watch as his strain grew from a seed to a stem, to a flowering plant.
As a member of Cypress Hill, B-Real has been involved in the cannabis market since the early 90’s, when there wasn’t much of one to speak of. Now, as legalization spreads throughout the United States, B-Real has opened his own dispensary called Dr. GreenThumb. His strain of Tangie, a citrusy-sativa, even took third place at the 2015 Cannabis Cup.
Ever heard of Kurupt’s Moonrock? This rapper was the first to make these amazing, wonderful, heaven-sent, kief-coated creations, and we all love him for it. While it might not exactly be a strain, it is definitely the most potent product available. Most high-quality herb is between 20–25% THC; Moonrock’s ring in at an astounding 52% THC.
