There have been some great songs about cannabis over the years but while many simply encourage the use of cannabis or were inspired by cannabis, only one song outlines the history of cannabis. Blue Scholars was formed in 2002 by the duo DJ Sabzi and MC Geologic while going to school at the University of Washington. This Seattle-based group joined forces with now famous Macklemore to produce “Tommy Chong” which aims to educate their listeners about the evolution of marijuana.
The Origins of Marijuana

“Deep in jungles of the Ganges River
Two thousand B.C.
See Hindus and Sikhs
Shitloads of weed.”
The earliest mention of marijuana has been found in The Vedas or sacred Hindu texts. These writings may have been compiled as early as 2000 to 1400 B.C.
Era of Hemp
“Very first plant cultivated for the fabric
And anytime they burned it
The people started dancing.
Medicine man put the people in a trance.”
Hemp was huge back in 1700s before it was made illegal. Interestingly the original Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper.
Greeks and Turks
“Greeks and the Turks traded gold for dope.”
Hashish was a huge commodity in Greece and Turkey and as regularly traded.
“Love is a Smoke Made With The Fume of Sighs”
“And soon Shakespeare smoked the shit
And wrote dramas.”
According to a study done on Shakespeare’s personal pipe collection, eight of these pipes tested positive for cannabis use and two tested positive for cocaine.
Little Stoner Syndrome
“Soldiers Napoleon led wrought civilians
And stashes of hash
Took it back to France with them.”
Though Napoleon didn’t have direct influence in the introduction of hashish into France, his soldiers have been noted to have been users of the drug, introducing it into the community and using it on the battlefield.
First Drug Smuggler
“Christopher Columbus, first drug smuggler
Slaves made to grow his shit
But smoked some of it to laugh at the master
Plotting his disaster.”
Christopher Columbus carried hemp seed on his fleet for use in case of shipwreck to grow crops for raw materials and for use as a food source.
“Cool, you gotta know the rules
How to live
You want to find the loopholes
Do what I say
As long as you ain’t got forty grams in your hand
Can’t get you with a felony
But anything less than that is a misdemeanor
And legally a reason for police to take seizure.”
When was the last time you got legal advice in a song?
They Don’t Want to See That
“Even with initiatives passed
Decriminalizing the green grass
They don’t want to see that.”
States with decriminalization and legalization still do not allow for public smoking of marijuana, you will still get a fine but will not go to jail.
Prohibition Has Failed
“Believe that this law is so flawed
The foundations done
The more things outlawed
The more outlaws run”
They are right and made it sound good. Prohibition leads to the market being run by criminals rather than legal organizations with hard working Americans.
“So when you puff that
Thinking that’s how it is
Blowing more trees than the
Knowing that your six times as likely
As them to do time
If your skin tone is darker than his”
While this song was made in 2011, two years later reports state that the gap of African Americans doing time for simple possession is four times higher than whites, despite using the drug at about the same rate.
