We have all seen it in the movies. We know that post-secondary education is a critical point in one’s life. You may meet new friends or a significant other, but statistics suggest it will be your first major exposure to marijuana.
Let’s take a look at some numbers:
According to the National Post, 51% of Canadian adults achieved some sort of post-secondary education. America has similar numbers, a 2012 study shows 84% of high-school graduates will attend some form post-secondary. During this time, students will be exposed to a number of new experiences. The chances that experience will include marijuana is about 51%. This works out to about 25% of the North American population getting baked at least once in college. In fact, it is so common that 1 in 20 college students admitted on a national survey to inhaling on a daily basis. Why are so many students trying marijuana in college?
One possible answer:
Students are using herb to combat the stress of post-secondary life. According to a 2013 Canadian survey, 89% of students said they were overwhelmed by all they had to do. Worse yet, 86.9% said they were exhausted, 56% felt overwhelming anxiety and nearly 10% had seriously considered suicide. With all this pressure, it’s not surprising that students turn to marijuana to help them cope.
Most students are not able to enjoy herb freely. Campus security, authority figures and societal pressure force herb fans into the shadows. We are led to believe that people who get buzzed on anything other than alcohol are losers and not to be trusted. This is just not true. We may not talk about it, but there are many successful herb-loving students out there. With the help of the anonymous confession app, Whisper, we are able to bring some light to this issue.
