It is likely that at some point in your life your thoughts on marijuana were different than they were today. Let’s face it, you probably weren’t born pro-weed.

You stumbled upon it probably in your teens, and at first was unsure about it, and as you became more familiar with it, your thoughts on it changed. It’s interesting to think how opinions can change over the years.

A lot can change in 10 years

In less than a decade, the public views of marijuana have shifted dramatically toward support for its legalization. It seems like in a blink of an eye things began to change. Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia currently have laws legalizing marijuana for medicinal use in some form. Four states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for recreational use.

Statistics say, about 48% of Americans have smoked pot at least once in their lives, and 52% of Americans favor marijuana legalization. Of the 52% of Americans who support marijuana legalization, 65% of those ages 18 – 32 support legalization more than any other age group. These statistics show how times are changing. Millennials are leading the way and with this leadership they will continue to change in the next 10 years.

Get this: Seven in 10 people who said they had not tried marijuana in 1977 believed it was a gateway drug, but that dropped to 50 percent by 2013.

What has caused this change in Americans attitudes towards marijuana? Could it be education? Could it be the changing beliefs of opinion or political leaders?  It is probably a mixture of things, but whatever it is, it is a good thing.

Marijuana has been around for a long time..

Marijuana has actually been used for medicinal purposes for over 3000 years but only recently has it become a common and welcomed remedy for patients. Many studies are being conducted on the medical benefits of marijuana. These studies have proved that marijuana is a natural pain reliever and can help people with cancer, epilepsy, arthritis and other chronic diseases. With more doctors and politicians advocating for medicinal marijuana has likely helped changed the views of the public. When a noteworthy person like a doctor or senator is pro anything the public is likely to jump on the bandwagon too.

Times are changing

Nearly six-in-ten Democrats, which is nearly 59% of the party, favor legalizing the use of marijuana. This is similar to the independents where 58% favor marijuana legalization. Only 39% of Republicans support its legalization. Perhaps the fact that Obama has been in power of the country for the last 8 years has led to changing views.

Read on to see how others opinions, from the Whisper app,  have changed as they became older or more educated on the topic. Some people have even changed their minds because their lives improved because of the use of marijuana for medicine.
