Despite the fact that marijuana use has been largely repressed in our most recent history, there have still been tremendously famous stoners in that time. It´s likely that most celebrities have been hiding their marijuana use since prohibition, but there are a handful who were open about it and how it benefited their lives.

It´s also not surprising that some of the most famous people in history have used marijuana – it probably helped them with the creative power they needed to live their dream. Here are the stories of five famous stoners in history, and how they used marijuana.

1. Abraham Lincoln

Ironically enough, one of the USA´s most influential presidents was a complete pot-head. “Two of my favorite things are sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe of sweet hemp, and playing my Hohner harmonica,” Abraham had allegedly once wrote in a letter to the very makers of those harmonicas.

Lincoln was heavily against prohibition, saying that it just created crimes out of things that were not crimes. He probably would have been devastated to see the America of today, doing all in its power to stop the marijuana revolution!

2. George Washington

There seems to be a trend with American presidents, as the first president of the USA, George Washington, was also known to love the herb. He had his own hemp plantation, and was an advocate for all the uses of hemp. In fact, George Washington signed the very first copy of the Declaration of Independence, which was written on hemp.

He was well known to love having a smoke as well as tending to his marijuana plants. He was apparently quite the grower, spending a lot of time separating seeds to create a strong strain.

3. Carl Sagan

Carl Sagan, renowned astronomer and author, as well as the creator of the TV documentary series, Cosmos, is an avid marijuana user. Carl Sagan´s work revolves around the astronomical make up of the human experience, as well the philosophical implications of that. Sagan admits to having used marijuana for inspiration. He says it helped him open up in an incredibly spiritual way, allowing him to understand the human psychology better. This helped him be more creative and more inspired in his work.

Sagan says about prohibition, “The illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world.”

4. Henry Ford

Henry Ford was most well known for his endeavor to make cars out of hemp – and he did it successfully. This man was not just about the recreational enjoyment of the plant, but the practical use for it, too. To make his car, Henry Ford made hemp plastic, hemp fibre and hemp fuel. He made and ran his car entirely out of hemp.

He was a true hemp enthusiast, seeing the extreme advantage in using the hemp plant over cutting down forests.

5. Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs is arguably one of the most famous stoners of the 21st century. Jobs effectively created his entire life out of te inspiration he got from using psychedelic substances. His experimentation included chemicals like LSD, and Jobs says they helped him see outside of the box.

Jobs says he used marijuana mostly for relaxation and inspiration during his career, and says that experimenting with psychedelics was one of the “two or three most important things” he ever did in his life.
