Now that cannabis is becoming widely accepted, more people are starting to realize the industry’s potential. Every other day another actor or musician gets on board with the movement, and now, the entertainment industry is looking to get a piece of that (cannabis infused) pie.

Amazon has recently announced “Highland,” a new television series that centers around a woman and her family’s marijuana business. Before you go all, ‘this has been done before,’ I’ll have you know that “Highland” takes a different approach.

Unlike Showtime’s hit series “Weeds,” Comedian and actress Margaret Cho, known widely for her role in “All-American Girl” and “Drop Dead Diva,” plays a struggling addict who after being released from a court-ordered rehab facility, has the chance to start over… only to move back home with her parents who run their own marijuana dispensary.

According to Variety, “Highland” is said to be written by Liz Sarnoff, known for her work on shows such as “Deadwood” and “Lost.” Amazon Studios will be co-producing the series along with Tomorrow Studios, and is set to premiere for Amazon Prime.

In addition to being absolutely hilarious, Margaret Cho is an avid supporter of the legalization of marijuana and a cannabis enthusiast herself. She’s appeared on shows such as Snoop Dogg’s Thanksgiving Special on the YouTube channel, GGN (double G network.) Cho argues that “medical and recreational marijuana and the end of prohibition is important in terms of helping people and getting safe access.” Smart lady.

Luckily, Cho is also on board as one of the show’s executive producers, which means that she’ll most likely be an influence on the creative process of the series.

Now that cannabis is legal in 4 states, this dramedy is said to show cannabis in a more realistic way, and it’s about time. It won’t be long before we start to see more television platforms jump on board with the cannabis movement.

Weed TV shows are becoming all the rage now with Kevin Smith’s “Hollyweed” and Lorne Michael’s new show.
