Jack Herer is a popular, award-winning strain many people know of, but have you ever heard of the person who inspired it?
Jack Herer the strain
A sativa dominant hybrid that has genetics of Skunk #1, Haze, and Northern Lights #5. The strain created by the Sensi Seed Bank in the Netherlands was released in 1994 and won the High Times Cannabis Cup the same year.
Recently I was in Fort Collins, Colorado and visited Infinite Wellness Center, a medical and recreational dispensary. A budtender named Paul showed me the strain Jacky White, which is Jack Herer crossed with White Widow. Its aroma was earthy with hints of honey. The official description of this strain’s smell is grapefruit, so maybe that’s why I thought honey! Paul described it as upbeat, energetic, motivational with no anxiety or paranoia.
Jack Herer the cannabis activist
The “Emperor of Hemp,” he ran for President twice in 1988 and 1992 as a Grassroots Party candidate. He’s the author of “The Emperor Wears No Clothes,” an informative book about all things cannabis covering its use in industry, medicine and throughout history. For example, can you guess how Hempfield, PA and Hempstead, NY got their names? America demonized cannabis during World War I and it continued through the 1950s and into the Reagan/Bush era. Jack died in 2010 and the Jack Herer Foundation, run by his son Dan Herer, lives on “to help educate humanity that Hemp is what will save this planet and its people.”
I was at the third annual Northern Colorado Hemp Expo in Loveland, Colorado April 1st and 2nd and Dan Herer spoke on a panel titled “In the Beginning…” Dan said his dad was an “intense” presence growing up and would use him and his friends as free labor to help with his activism. He said he didn’t realize how important his dad’s work was until he stated smoking it himself. He made a comment in reference to the current hemp boom, “A great future can be built from what is happening.”
