Though mainstream media would dismiss his candidacy as a sideshow in politics, Bernie Sanders has progressed the idea of a candidate outside of current political heavyweights further in the minds of Americans that either Democrats or Republicans would like to concede. Running as a Democrat against Hillary Clinton, his grassroots campaign has been given minimal press coverage compared to other candidates. With the most powerful stance on cannabis legalization and political reform of any nominee on either side of the aisle, he has swept up more followers than can be easily dismissed, and whether he wins or not, he will have left his mark on the world of American politics, helping to change the dialog of opponents he has battled.

Pundits have even called for him to drop out of the race, but with the momentum of the upset victory in Indiana, Bernie Sanders has proclaimed:

“I think that we can pull off one of the great political upsets in the history of the United States.”

One of his more tongue-in-cheek donation drives called for donations of just $4.20, and met with a groundswell of funding. As the token cannabis candidate, calling for the complete removal of cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act, he has been featured on pipes, bongs, and other memorabilia that will probably last long after the election, and unlike the bumper stickers and pins of many candidates, will still be worth something regardless of his success in the political sphere.

Memorable quotes

The official cannabis candidate has spoken his mind on many occasions, while other candidates hedge their bets with ambiguity. Here are some of his most memorable moments.

“Too many Americans have seen their lives destroyed because they have criminal records as a result of marijuana use. That’s wrong.”

“We need to rethink the so-called ‘War on Drugs’ and take marijuana out of the federal Controlled Substances Act.”

“I smoked marijuana twice. Didn’t quite work for me, I coughed a lot. It’s not my thing, but it is the thing for a whole lot of people. Let me just say this: I have supported the use of medical marijuana, and when I was mayor of Burlington, in a city with a large population, I can tell you very few people were arrested for smoking marijuana… Our police had more important things to do.”

Trump and Clinton have both stated they would respect states that have legalized cannabis, but that respect does nothing to help the millions of Americans who face persecution for a non-toxic plant that saves lives and heals hearts and minds. Show your support by donating to Bernie, and show your cannabis pride in the first presidential runner since Jimmy Carter to call for the freedom of the good herb.
