Former NFL running back Ricky Williams has been one of the poster children for marijuana “abuse” in the NFL for over a decade. But after enduring criticism for the last few years, Williams is turning his love for cannabis into a positive message. Sports Illustrated is featuring Williams’ story in their new film “‘Ricky Williams Takes The High Road”, that chronicles his success in the cannabis industry.

Ricky Williams was once a standout running back. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1998 rushing for over 2,000 yards and 27 touchdowns. In fact, Williams was so good, the New Orleans Saints traded their entire 1999 draft class to select him 5th overall.

It’s kind of true but not the way people say it – that I quit the NFL to smoke weed.

But all of his credibility was thrown out the window after he repeatedly violated the NFL’s drug policy for marijuana use. Williams is now reviving his name and credibility through success in the cannabis industry.

In the trailer for Sports Illustrated’s July 13th film “‘Ricky Williams Takes The High Road”, we get to see a glimpse of the struggles and passion Williams has endured because of his love for cannabis.

The trailer clearly shows a new side of Williams. He seems happier. Freer.

I think I found a treasure map, and I’ve been on the path ever since.

Hopefully, the Sports Illustrated film really sticks to the positives and presents Williams as a pioneer—not wasted talent. Check out the trailer below and keep an eye out for the full film on July 13th.
