If you grew up in the early days of console gaming, you know that everyone had a favorite. Guys get a thing they love and stick with it. For vehicles, there are Chevy guys and Ford guys. With tools, there are Craftsman guys and DeWalt guys. Sports teams, political parties, soft drinks, we tend to stick with what we love. But when we were just kids, that allegiance evolved from a battle between game systems. Nintendo and Sega rivaled for our devotion, and Mario was countered by the notorious Sonic the Hedgehog.

The rise and fall of Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic portrayed Sega’s attempt to create an iconic character to pit against the popularity of Mario on Nintendo. Dashing across the screen and foiling evil robots with his speed, Sonic was a huge hit. But the little blue ball hit a wall he couldn’t bust when Sega flopped with the Sega Dreamcast. Since then, the company has been out of the console business altogether.

The final installments of our furious furred friend came with Sonic Generations, celebrating 20 years with an integration of modern game mechanics, and Sonic Lost World. The second game didn’t hold the thrall of audiences that had already begun to look elsewhere for innovation, and the franchise died out like a guttering candle.

Ressurection?

Our boy in blue looks to make a comeback next year. The Sonic Team announced their plans to unveil not one but two games in 2017 at the San Diego Comic-Con Friday. The first, Sonic Mania intends to blast players back to the past for some nostalgic gameplay in the 2D universe.

Sonic 1, 2, 3, & Sonic CD get reinvented with all-new gameplay, including both reimagined and completely new Zones, Acts, and bosses. Takashi Iizuka, Head of the Sonic Team, said:

Sonic Mania was born out of our fans’ love of the classic Sonic 2D platform games. This type of collaboration is a first for SEGA and we hope everyone will be both surprised and delighted by this title. Sonic Mania has been a passion project for the entire team and we look forward to sharing more details about it later this year.

Having the game actually playable at the event itself tonight was testament to the dedication of the team behind it.

But that just touches the tip of the iceberg.

All-new adventure

While maintaining some secrecy about it, the team also revealed that we can expect another game out in 2017. It promises not to be a sequel to Generations, but an all-new adventure for Sonic and his pals Tails and Knuckles. The release date still up in the air, all we know so far is that it will be available for Playstation 4, XBox One, PC, and Nintendo NX around the holidays.

After the flop that was Sonic Boom in 2014, fans have been without a franchise hit for over 6 years. Sonic ’06  also garnered poor reviews, and most fans agree that there hasn’t been a real crowd pleaser since Sonic & Knuckles in 1994. But with the 25th anniversary of the 1991 Genesis game, gamers have had their fingers crossed for something big.
