In a way, we’re living amongst one of the largest chemical experiments in history. Over the past century and a half, new chemicals and compounds never before seen on earth are now in everyday life. Over the past 30 years, 100,000 new industrial chemicals were approved for commercial use in the US. In fact, if you live in an industrialized country, you have an average of 700 synthetic chemicals in your tissue at any given time. These chemicals come from water, food, air, and exposure in your daily environment. While you can’t escape exposure to harmful chemicals altogether, you can choose to make your home as safe and clean as possible. Thankfully, hemp products can offer a helping hand. Here are five ways hemp will detoxify your home.
1. Clean sleep
You spend one-third of your life sleeping. This means that you develop a very intimate relationship to your mattress and bedding. Unfortunately, mattresses are now coated with flame-retardants, cotton pesticides, formaldehyde, and chemicals that cause respiratory and skin irritation. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. Flame retardants are nervous system disorders and cancer as well.
These chemicals off-gas over time, meaning they leak these chemicals into the home environment. Thankfully, there’s a way to reduce toxic exposure while you sleep. Organic hemp mattresses and bedding. Hemp is more durable than cotton and is mold and insect resistant. As a 100% natural material, you don’t have to worry about sleeping on cancer-causing chemicals all night.
Natural mattresses are a bit of an investment, so opting for hemp bedding will help you detox your house while saving up for safer furniture. Organic cotton, wool, bamboo, and natural latex are other good choices. Here are a few options to consider:
- Hemp mattresses (contains safe, natural flame-resistant material in accordance with U.S. law)
- Hemp bedding (alternatives)
- Hemp pillows
- Hemp mattress pad
- Decorative hemp pillows
2. Clean skin care
Skin care is another big area of concern. Many of the skin care products found in supermarkets and elsewhere contain phthalates. Phthalates are chemicals that act like hormones in the body. These hormone-like compounds are linked to low sperm counts in men, obesity, diabetes, and thyroid irregularities.
To avoid phthalates, you have to do a little research. Scan cosmetic labels for words like “fragrance” and “perfume”. Avoid shampoos and skin care products with long lists of synthetic ingredients. Most of all, choose organic hemp. There are several great skin care lines out there that contain hemp seed oil.
Not only is hemp nutritious for your skin, but it is filled with antioxidants that protect your DNA from environmental damage. Here are a few great choices:
3. Reduce waste
One way to clean up your home is to get rid of products that cause an excessive amount of waste. Disposable paper towels and napkins are often treated with dyes and bleach. More often than not, they’re not made with recycled materials. Swapping out the disposables for some high-quality hemp products reduces your exposure to bleach and dyes while reducing your carbon footprint. Here are some nifty options:
- Organic hemp dish towel
- French Linen Hemp Dish Towel
- Hemp Dishcloth Combo Pack
- Hemp Forever Cloth
- Hemp dinner napkins
4. Safe flooring
Carpet is the biggest air filter in your home. Yet, carpeting is often sprayed down with flame retardants and other harmful chemicals. Carpet is also often made with synthetic materials that increase your carbon footprint. Hemp-fibre rugs provide a safe, natural alternative to synthetic carpeting.
5. Detoxify your home with clean air
It’s always nice to breathe in fresh air from natural environments. So, why not bring a little bit of nature back into your home? If you’re a casual cannabis grower, keep a plant or two near a south-facing window to help clean the air in your home. Or, keep one in your kitchen and use fan leaves and small buds in dishes like you would basil or other culinary herbs.
If you’d rather save your cannabis for a smokeable crop, spruce up your house with some other plants. 15-20 plants per 1,800 square feet of home can detoxify your environment and give you a decent amount of fresh, clean oxygen.
