Can you imagine being outside on a typical sunny day and all of a sudden you see a flying pizza? Me either, but a Domino’s in New Zealand is about to make it happen. Indeed, the company is planning to have their delicious pizzas delivered to you via drone. Though the idea sounds pretty damn cool, it’s still pending approval. Will traveling pizza ever be a thing? Will we finally get to avoid that awkward pizza dude? I sure hope so.

There’s no escaping the fact that technology continues to evolve with time. Likewise, companies like to improve their services by adopting new ways of doing things that’ll better satisfy their customers. In particular is Domino’s, which we all know as the company with tasty pizzas and my personal favorite, the chocolate lava cake.

Domino’s in New Zealand recently is ready for the drone and recently announced a partnership with drone delivery company Flirtey. What’s their goal? To deliver pizzas by air, of course.

There’s no denying that the idea sounds awesome, but the service is still waiting for approval from New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). However, Domino’s and Flirtey say that they expect to be beginning trial deliveries later this year. That is if they even get the “okay” from the authority. Don Meij, Domino’s Group

That is if they even get the “okay” from the authority. Don Meij, Domino’s Group CEO and Managing Director provided details on the trials in a statement,

These trial deliveries will help provide the insight we need to extend the weight carried by the drone and distance travelled. It is this insight that we hope will lead to being able to consider a drone delivery option for the majority of our orders.

We are planning a phased trial approach which is based on the CAA granting approval, as both Domino’s and Flirtey are learning what is possible with the drone delivery for our products but this isn’t a ‘pie in the sky’ idea. It’s about working with the regulators and Flirtey to make this a reality for our customers.

Flirtey: the first legal drone service

Behind the first-ever legal drone delivery is Flirtey. In fact, Flirtey’s drones dropped off medication in the US in July of last year. Though the company continues to be behind a number of trial deliveries today. However, commercial drone deliveries are still, for the most part, a pipe dream.

It appears to be a problem in the US due to new Federal Aviation Administration rules regarding the drone weight, speed, and so on. As a result, the hopes of companies that desire to deliver by air in the country are pretty much smashed.

Although this may be true, a spokesperson from New Zealand’s CAA says that it did approve a one-off UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) delivery service. Specifically, the service was for a commercial being filmed a few years ago. However, the CAA hasn’t approved any on-going UAV drone service before.

According to the current CAA rules in New Zealand, drones are not to be operated at night, they must be in clear view of the pilot, and may not weigh more than 55.1 pounds.

All in all, pizzas traveling by air may soon be a thing. But for now, we will just have to settle for the pizza guy/gal.

Do you think it would be cool to have a pizza delivered by drone? What other companies do you think should join in? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter, or in the comments below.
