We all know that most beers have basically zero nutritional benefits, but what if you could take all the beneficial molecules of cannabis and inject them into a flavourful pale ale? The folks at Dad and Dudes Breweria claim to have done just that after recently getting approved by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau to sell their cannabis-infused beer.

Co-owner Mason Hembree has had to jump quite a few hurdles to perfect his recipe for adding CBD to his pale ale. Not only does he have regulatory bodies waiting to complain about his recipe, but the actual food chemistry involved is pretty complicated.

We had to find the perfect time in the brewing process to add the CBD to the beer. If you add it too early it denatures when we refine the beer because the compound attaches to the brewing yeast. – Mason Hembree

Hembree says that each pint of General Washington’s Secret Stash should have 4mg of cannabidiol. Now this might seem like not very much, and it truly isn’t, but the product isn’t advertised for medical use. It’s just simply adding a healthy compound to an alcoholic beverage.

Making a statement

Although Hembree wants to see his CBD branded beer be a big success, he also has some other goals. He recognizes the benefits of cannabidiol and he’s tired of it seeing it not get enough research and attention because of its federal scheduling.

Cannabinoids are a miracle compound, and I thought it would be a responsible choice to put them into beer, they are an antioxidant and neuro-protectant that have a lot of health benefits. Cannabis should be removed from government scheduling completely. Even the hemp plant is not legal at the federal level. It’s just stupid.

Hembree hopes to make his CBD pale ale expand to the entire American beer market. His brand will be attending the Great American Beer Festival on October 6-8 in Denver.

Five flavours will be available to sample including an IPA, a double IPA, a cream ale, and a Berliner Weiss.
