Dr. Don Stacy of the Louisville, Kentucky area had an experience radically changed is perspective. After treating a young cancer patient, he got a good glimpse into the healing powers of cannabis. Watch as this radiation oncologist tells a panel that a former cancer patient changed his view on cannabis.

Success with medical cannabis

The Doctor/patient relationship is a tricky one. Doctors work with people during some of the most trying times of their lives. There’s no doubt that what these professionals experience in the exam room has the potential to radically shift their world view.

For Dr. Stacy, his change in perspective happened after working with a 25-year-old cancer patient.

The patient had head and neck cancer. She was given chemotherapy, radiation, and various medications. But, these standard drugs did nothing to manage the extreme symptoms associated with the disease or the intense cancer treatment.

Desperate, she began using cannabis. After a while, her cannabis was in remission. She even got married and had a baby. It is difficult to say whether or not it was a single part of her treatment that helped her, or a combination of everything.

But, we do know that cannabis successfully helped her through the experience.

The bad news begins

Sadly, this story does not have a happy ending. A couple of years after her initial treatment, her cancer returned. And when it rains, it pours. Here’s how Dr. Stacy describes what happened to her,

Unfortunately, her cancer recurred after treatment. Her husband abandoned her. She then started aggressive treatment again to try to control her recurring disease, which led to a variety of severe side effects. Based on her experience initially, she decided to try to restart to smoke cannabis again.

The patient in question went turned to black market cannabis to treat her cancer after it returned. Sadly to say, she was sexually assaulted during that time. After the assault, she decided to grow her own cannabis at home.  However, someone notified the police.

Once the police became involved, the patient’s story becomes a lot worse. Dr. Stacy explains,

She was arrested, her child was taken away from her, and she ended up dying of her cancer.

Cannabis had successfully helped her into remission before. This woman certainly deserved another chance to save her own life.

Cannabis in Kentucky

This patient’s experience struck a chord with Dr. Stacy. Though, this wasn’t his only patient that was helped by medical cannabis. Other patients self-reported their cannabis use. Dr. Stacy stated that they found the herb to be “highly effective at minimizing their symptoms”.

Yet, Kentucky has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to medical cannabis laws, even if you are a cancer patient trying to reclaim your life.

Possession of 8 ounces of herb or less is a misdemeanor that can result in 45 days of jail time and a $250 fine. If you are found cultivating any plants, you can face up to 1 year in jail. Or, as the patient above, have your child taken away.

Arresting a young, single mother fighting cancer and taking away her child seems like the real crime here. Where is her justice? Nation-wide, compassionate care is past due.
