Elephants have long been portrayed as wise, strong, and honorable creatures. Yet, thanks to poachers and habitat loss, numbers of these graceful giants are dwindling worldwide. While wildlife preserves, state and national parks attempt to provide space and safety for elephants, these protective efforts have yet to keep up with the devastation of the ivory trade. Now, two of the world’s largest ivory markets have decided to call it quits. Here are the three perfect strains to celebrate.
China banned ivory sales
In 2013, over 20,000 elephants were lost to poaching. Ivory poachers killed the animals to harvest their tusks, which can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars on the black market.
In Africa, the elephant population has plummeted 30% over the past decade. Currently, poaching is contributing to an 8% population loss each year.
China holds the world’s largest ivory market. By some estimates, the country fuels between 50 and 70% of total trade in ivory products. Now, after years of international pressure, China has taken a stand against ivory.
All commerce in Ivory will be banned by the end of 2017. Wildlife advocates, biologists, and ecologists around the world are hopeful that this will help save certain species of African elephants from extinction.
The United States, the world’s second largest ivory market, recently adopted a near total ban its ivory trade beginning in 2016. These big moves are major steps toward the preservation of the species for future generations to come.
Why not celebrate these accomplishments with a little cannabis? Here are three elephant strains in honor of the new ban.
Elephant is an uplifting sativa known to promote creativity, happiness, and arousal. Great for the day, this strain is energetic and focused.
If celebrating major dents in the ivory trade makes you want to get out in nature yourself, this is a perfect strain to take outside. Elephant is relaxed and stimulating at the same time, proving an upbeat mood to just about any situation.
2. Purple Elephant
The Chinese and U.S. environmental announcements come at a great time. BBC’s Planet Earth 2 is now streaming. The series launched in the UK this November, and premieres in the U.S. on BBC America on January 28, 2017.
If camping on the couch, listening to David Attenborough, and marveling beautiful shots of nature sounds like your thing, Purple Elephant is the strain for you. An indica-dominant hybrid, this strain is sedative and will leave you locked and riveted on the sofa.
This strain also features up to 25% THC, which means that it is recommended for experienced consumers.
3. White Elephant
White Elephant is an indica-dominant hybrid cross between ultra-powerful White Widow and Purple Elephant. The result is a tasty, sweet, berry strain that also pairs well with a movie night or de-stressing after a long day at work.
Like Purple Elephant, this strain is quite potent. White Elephant features a THC content op to 22% on average. Novice consumers may find this strain a little too sedative and upbeat.SHARE
