As cannabis consumption has evolved, more ways to consume it have been developed. Quite recently, wax made a splash in the cannabis community. Questions surrounding wax arose in the cannabis community: Is it safe? What is it exactly? Just… how? Wax is an incredibly concentrated form of THC and used specifically for dabbing (however it can also be sprinkled into a joint). First, what is it? But more importantly, how is wax made?

Wax, or budder, is potent and contains anywhere from 75% to 90%+ THC. Compared to the amount of THC in a single joint, this percentage is colossal. For obvious reasons, the high is much stronger.

A dab oil rig makes the high almost instantaneous. With wax, there is also a probability of hallucinations, so if you’re new to dabbing, less is more! Also, due to the higher concentrations of THC, wax is pricey and can be sold for up to more than 4x the amount per gram compared to a gram of traditional flowery bud.

If you are into dabbing, then wax is something you’re going to be making a large investment in, but the highs are high.

Wax is not complicated to make, but it can be very dangerous to produce on your own. Unless you’re a pro with the proper equipment (stable/controlled Butane and a chemical hood) don’t try this at home. Seriously, you could get hurt.

Wax is also known as BHO, or Butane Hash Oil. To make wax, marijuana buds are packed into tubes and then blasted with butane. The exposure to butane extracts the hash oil. For the safety of the user, the excess butane must then be evaporated. Lastly, oils are purged with heat. The gooey substance left behind looks like wax, hence the name.

Again, for many reasons, this is not a process you should try at home. Butane gas in highly flammable, and without proper ventilation, a chemical explosion is always a possibility. Please be safe!

Where is wax available?

Since making your own wax can pose some definite dangers, where can you get it? While wax is a relatively new way to consume cannabis following legalization of medical and recreational cannabis, wax is available at most dispensaries.

If you’re a seasoned dabber, and a medical or recreational user, wax is available to you. Explore various strains and concentrations and decide which one you like best! Also, since wax is more expensive than what you might be used to, look for deals.

A number of dispensaries have sales for wax on dedicated days of the week. Do your research and save yourself a buck or two!

Whether you are new to the world of cannabis wax, or an experienced dabber, knowing how ANY product you consume is made is important. More than anything, be safe, and enjoy some good wax.
