Yeah, you read that correctly: the Original Tamagotchi is back. So, now, you can transport yourself back to the Nineties.

From Nintendo reissuing the NES (as the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition) to Sega’s not-so-great Mega Drive Classic Game Console, there is a lot of nostalgic fun being remarketed to those who want to relive those halcyon days of their youth, which continues with the 20th Anniversary Tamagotchi.

That’s right, to celebrate the original release in the mid-Nineties, Bandai has relaunched the classic Tamagotchi toy in its near-original form, meaning you’ll be back to raising your Tamagotchi – one of the six initial characters, too, of course – on a black-and-white display.

Although, one thing has changed, which is the size – see, the 20th-anniversary models are about half the size of the originals.

The original

In case you missed it, which might not have been a bad thing, the Tamagotchi was as popular as a Furby but with a bit more of playability. Simply put, the Tamagotchi was a handheld “digital pet”, which quickly became one of the biggest toy fads in the Nineties, becoming so popular that it had to be banned from many schools.

Currently, this particular Tamagotchi is only available in Japan, which means the displays are in Japanese. But, if you’re a fan, you’ll probably import one. Even though it retails for about twenty bucks, the re-release quickly sold out, so good luck tracking one down.

If you don’t find one, or aren’t too worried about having it in its almost original form, you can just download the app for your smartphone.
