Everybody is familiar with The Flintstones, but you might not know that there was a theme park based on the iconic cartoon, which still stands to this day. Really, unless you visited Bedrock City when it was open, chances are you didn’t even know such a place was built. But it was, being opened in 1972 in Arizona, not too far from the Grand Canyon (since, obviously, the terrain is perfect for Bedrock). These days, it’s less of a theme park and more of an RV park and campground, though. But you are more than welcome to visit, all but one day a year, when it is closed on Christmas Day.

You might not also have known that “Yabba-Dabba-Doo” means “Welcome to you”, too, which stands true to this day.

But what should be surprising is that, although it was probably the first theme park based on the Hanna-Barbera classic, it was definitely not the last. Another of the Bedrock-themed locations was in operation until 2015, until its owners – the family who helped build the park in the Sixties – decided to close its door.

Just like the park in Arizona, The Flintstones Bedrock City Theme Park and Camping Resort in South Dakot took its design cues from those prehistoric people of Bedrock.
