The world knows how the Death Star plans have been stolen, and is about to discover how Han Solo got his reputation, but the next standalone movie in the Star Wars franchise is said to be about Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Obi-Wan Kenobi brings a new hope
If the reports are true, the standalone could do well, considering the talent behind it. Not only does it include Lucasfilm’s Story Group and producer Kathleen Kennedy (E.T. The Extra Terrestrial and Jurassic Park), it will also bring in Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot and The Hours) who is said to be in talks to direct the feature.
But no Obi-Wan Kenobi flick would work without the actor who brought the character to the screen for a generation, which is why Ewan McGregor is said to be returning to the role, over a decade after his final performance as the Jedi Master in Revenge of the Sith (although, McGregor did record a line of dialogue as the character in The Force Awakens).
While there have been untold rumors about a standalone movie that would focus on Obi-Wan Kenobi’s forced solitude on Tatooine, it has just been that: rumors. Those rumors led to more reports that it was going ahead, which saw McGregor constantly being asked if he was involved, something he always chose to answer.
McGregor told Entertainment Weekly, last April,
There’s no official offer, and I haven’t met them about it or anything. But I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do it if they wanted to do it.
It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes. I think they’ve got films to make until the 2020s, so I don’t think it’s going to happen soon, if it happens at all.
In a galaxy far, far away
With those rumors circulating for months, fan focus eventually fell back on the next episode in the saga, The Last Jedi, as well as the next standalone, the much-troubled – and still untitled – Han Solo movie.
Then, on Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that the movie reportedly has a director attached to the project, one that brings a lot of credibility to the project.
Sources say talks are at the earliest of stages and that the project has no script. If a deal is made, Daldry would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm brass.
Would this be the adventure that would see Obi-Wan transition into Old Ben?
