Cannabis is taking the world of beauty products by storm. In fact, the products you use today could very well contain the plant without you realizing it. For those who are trying to steer clear of THC, this could be a cause for concern. But not to worry, most of these products won’t get you even the slightest bit high. However, they will do wonders for your skin. The cannabis plant is not just limited to one part either; it has several. The two most commonly found in skin care products: hemp seed oil and CBD oil. Here are the differences between each and why you should be using cannabis beauty products.

Hemp Seed Oil

In short, hemp seed oil is achieved by pressing hemp seeds. If you’re shopping for a hemp beauty product, then chances are it contains this exact oil. But what’s it good for anyway?

Well, according to New York dermatologist Sejal Shah, MD, who spoke with NewBeauty, hemp contains fatty acid, which doesn’t just repair the skin, but also protects it and so much more,

Like many oils, hemp contains fatty acids that are moisturizing, protective and reparative for the skin. It’s currently found in a number of different types of products, including soaps, creams, lotions, oils, makeup, and even hairstyling products, but I think it’s best used in an oil, cream or other product that is meant to hydrate and/or moisturize the skin.

A common misconception about hemp seed oil is that it can get you high. But being that it only contains .3% THC at the most, that’s just not possible.

Beauty brands like Marley Natural and The Body Shop offer a variety of hemp seed oil-containing products. Along with fatty acids, there’s plenty of bioactive phytochemicals inside, including phenolic compounds, stearidonic acids, and saturated oils.

Also, they hold antioxidants like Vitamin E, phytosterols, carotene, chlorophyll, and minerals. While that all sounds marvelous, New York dermatologist Estee Williams, MD says that their actual benefits to the skin, when applied as a topical, remains unknown.

CBD Oil

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is a nonpsychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant. It’s no secret that inflammation can hurt the body. But did you know that it can also lead to other major health problems? Luckily, CBD oil and its high antioxidant properties, along with amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, can help tackle it like a champ.

Like hemp seed oil, CBD is commonly found in serums and moisturizers. To point out a beauty brand example, CBD for Life has an entire line of skincare that uses 99-percent pure CBD extract obtained from stems and stalks of industrial hemp.

People swear by CBD and its ability to reduce fine lines and improve skin conditions like acne. But according to Dr. Williams, who also spoke to NewBeauty, there’s no data to prove it. However, there are a few studies that can confirm that such topicals may be able to treat skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis.

For this reason, the future of CBD in skin care is promising. Of course, the whole thing is still relatively new. And due to the plant’s legal status and the FDA’s involvement, its use may come with limitations. But folks are always looking for new ways to both heal and enhance their skin, so there’s hope.
