The search for better buds is never ending. Users looking for a better smell, better taste, greater potency and even a clearer experience of the high. So what goes into making better bud? We are going to look at a list of seven grow hacks that go into the making of better buds.
Since female buds really are the cream of the crop, you are going to want to ensure that their buds get as large and potent as possible. The best way to achieve this is simply by getting them to grow at a faster rate. The faster they grow, the more time they have to become huge. So let’s first look at growing at a faster rate
1. Speed Up Your Grow Rate
Some quick and easy ways to increase your grow rate is to prune the dying leaves which can be spotted by their yellowing color. They are just eating up energy and resources that could be directed into growing the healthy buds faster. Another simple hack is to “top” your plant. This is the cutting off of the uppermost buds. They can be taken home to be cured and smoked if you like. This again gives more resources to the remaining buds helping them grow faster and have more potency.
The most convenient way of harvesting faster is to find a variety that naturally matures earlier. Short-season (Indica) varieties will always mature earlier than late-season (Sativa) ones. The plants can be forced to flower by increasing the period of darkness to 12 hours per day by covering them with a lightproof tarp or another cover. This will cause them to flower and ripen earlier (up to a month earlier) providing larger, tighter buds.
2. Gotta Have The Best Nutrients
If you want your buds to be fat and juicy, you are going to have to spoil them a bit. Take special care of them during the flowering phase of the plant’s life cycle. What buds crave most of all is phosphorous, so try a mixture of 10% nitrogen, 30% phosphorous, and 10% potassium, commonly referred to as NPK 10-30-10 to curb those cravings. This high amount of phosphorous is rather difficult to come by in today’s world, but mixing wood ash with water should do the trick.
3. Lots Of Light
One of the most sure-fire ways of increasing your bud growth is by increasing the intensity of the light that is hitting your plants. If the light is not intense enough, your plants will have stretched themselves upwards during their vegetative state, becoming tall and skinny rather than short and bushy.
4. Carbon Dioxide
If you increase the amount of CO2 that your plant is receiving, you will essentially be feeding them more, allowing their growth to be sped up even further. Adding CO2 nicely complements increasing light intensity since it basically is expanding your plant’s ability to use light.
5. Temperature And Humidity
When the light is turned on, an ideal temperature for the cuttings and seedlings is between 68ºF and 77ºF (20ºC and 25ºC). As the plants get older they can evaporate a little bit more and the temperature may increase to a maximum of 82ºF (28ºC). For the humidity In the first stages of growing your plant, the humidity can be about 70%, and you can reduce it by 5 every week until it gets to 40%.
6. Curing And Storing Changes Potency
Much has been said about proper curing. A good, slow drying of cannabis flowers ripens the flavor and, according to some, also ripens the potency. Since most people don’t smoke fresh flowers, it’s hard to tell how potency changes during curing, but now that many extract artists use fresh plants, maybe this curing effect should be considered.
7. Start With Top-Shelf Genetics
It’s really tough to get truly top-shelf buds if you start with mid-grade seeds or clones; you’re giving yourself a much higher chance of disappointment because no growing method can overcome genetics! Search for the right, true quality genetics and don’t be afraid to research to make sure you’re getting exactly what you want! Good seeds cost more than bag seed, but the money you pay for quality is worth it Buying seeds from a reputable cannabis seed bank and getting your chosen strains shipped to you, will have you able to consistently produce star-quality buds.
Those are seven great hacks you can use to grow bigger, tighter and more potent bud.
