Cannabis culture and the Simpsons go together like Superman and Lois Lane. The Simpsons even has its own character dedicated to the cause (Otto the bus driver). However, as fun and loveable as he is, he doesn’t always portray the right image of cannabis culture.
Needless to say, there are countless times the Simpsons have made reference to cannabis, and countless times someone has been high on the show (other than Otto).
1. Weekend at Burnsie’s
Homer Simpson is prescribed medicinal marijuana after getting pecked in the eyes by a murder of crows. But while getting high all the time, Homer’s stoned state also sees him promoted to Executive Vice-President at the power plant, because Mr. Burns appreciates how Homer laughs at all of his lame jokes, and so he goes to a rally for the legalization of medical marijuana (but the rally is actually held a day after the ban was approved by voters).
2. The flight before Christmas
Bart stays up late on Christmas Eve to kill Santa Claus for not bringing him a dirt bike three Christmases ago. He eventually falls asleep and dreams that the Polar Express, driven by Otto Mann, and judging from the picture, that train was pretty high.
3. Cheech and Chong reunite
After Tommy Chong walks away from the Cheech & Chong reunion tour, Homer goes on the road as his replacement. Let’s be real, though, these two cats are always high.
4. Bart to the future
In a future where Lisa is president and Bart is a loser in a Hawaiian shirt who ends up living with crowd favourite Ralph Wiggum. Bart is a stoner who asks Lisa to legalize marijuana. Her response: “Consider it done!”
5. Side Show Bob Roberts
Side Show Bob runs for mayor against Mayor Quimby and wins by a large margin by promising to actually complete some of the Mayor’s broken promises like building a freeway named after Matlock as well as exposing the Mayor for his tax-cheating, swinger, pot-smoking ways.
6. D’oh in the wind
After finding out his middle name is “Jay”, Homer is drawn to the care-free lifestyle of hippies, and decides to become one himself. Homer dons a filthy old poncho left behind by Mona and carries around a frisbee (which has “Homer Jay” inscribed on it) as part of his hippie guise. Those hippie friends have a juice factory and wanting to help, Homer makes a batch but added a ”special plant” that was not meant to go in the recipe and gave hallucinations to those who drank it.
7. Tapped out
This is a neat little tie-in. Tapped out is a mobile app that can be purchased in iOS or Android and features Otto needing to go do a 30-minute task so he can go get high and sleep on top of the bus.
So there you have it, seven times someone was high on the Simpsons.
