With more states legalizing weed, and more dispensaries opening, it’s easy to see that the cannabis industry is booming. But with that growth comes new emerging trends, as reported by Salar Media Group and Civilized, which you might not have known about.
1. It’s a science
The report noted that as of 2015, there are roughly 22,000 published studies on cannabis. Which means that beyond anything else, cannabis is pushing the boundaries of science. The first U.S. research institution was created last year to specifically focus on cannabis research.
The trend here is that cannabis is now being treated as a medicine with specific benefits and applications to specific diseases. This research will only continue to expand in the years ahead.
2. Greener green
There are some concerns about the effect of cannabis cultivation on the environment. California passed the Medical Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act last year that contained requirements for water usage and prohibits the use of volatile or poisonous solvents in cannabis preparations.
The report praised Humboldt’s Finest, an alliance of cannabis growers based in Humboldt County in California for utilizing”a rain grown, sun grown cultivation technique that collects rainwater and storm runoff”.
3. Intellectual property
The advances made in genetic and intellectual property of cannabis will be capitalized by businesses to define their product and make it more consistent.
The general direction here is for combining functional studies and molecular modeling to improve the scientific community’s understanding of the molecular basis for the physiological functions of CBD.
4. Crafty cannabis
In similar form to craft breweries, growers will hone special strains in limited batches and release them to more selective cannaseurs. Humboldt County in California will earn a special distinction, similar to how the Champagne region in France is home to the only sparkling wine that can use that name.
Celebrity-branded weed is expected to grow, with Leaf’s by Snoop, Willie’s Reserve and Chong’s Choice already reaping commercial success.
5. High-end highs
There will always be a market that delivers to those who want the finer things in life. In the cannabis market, that includes things like gold rolling papers, high-spec dispensaries and top shelf flower. The report states that cannabis brands “are replicating what happened in liquor brands with the introduction of high-end, more expensive tequilas, dark liquors, vodkas and sake.”
