There’s Nothing Quite Like Your First Time
I had been to Amsterdam before but that was different- this was my first time in a legal state in MY home country and that was exciting in itself.
I hadn’t been to Colorado since 2005, and well, a lot has changed since then. Not knowing what to expect, I was excited, and a bit anxious about being in a legal state for the first time. I had been to Amsterdam before but that was different- this was my first time in a legal state in MY home country and that was exciting in itself.
Welcome to Colorado
After I grabbed my luggage, my driver Marlene was waiting for me outside the airport. Marlene, who picked me up courtesy of My 420 Tours, was just as excited for my first experience as I was. Filled with curiosity, I asked her about her thoughts on Colorado’s legalization along the drive to our first stop: The Green Solution Dispensary.
When we pulled up to the dispensary, I was a bit confused. There were no angels or butterflies fluttering around it, nothing causing attention to the fact that there was a pot shop right off a highway exit in what I felt was the middle of nowhere, Colorado. But none of that really mattered. I was stoked.
As I opened the door to the dispensary, I caught a whiff of the potent cannabis aroma. I said to the guy at the front desk, “Mmm… Smells good in here.” He chuckled and replied, “Yep, sure does.” After showing him my 21+ ID, he gave me a “ticket” to wait in line. Wait in line? I was expecting this to be more like a casual trip to the liquor store and less like a waiting-in-line-at-the-drug-store type of thing, but it turned out to be more of the latter.
While I waited in line, I perused the glass displays all around the shop, containing everything cannabis from dry herb and wax to oils and edibles. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. When I got to the front of the line, a budtender asked me what I was looking for. I was so overwhelmed that I went with dry herb, because well, that’s pretty much all I knew. Chunky Diesel? Sure, sounds good to me.
And we’re off!
When I got to the hotel, a vaporizer was given to me at the hotel check-in. Yes, you read that correctly. A weed friendly hotel? The first and last time my friends and I smoked weed in a hotel room was when we were celebrating our college graduation.
We got busted on the spot and ended up having to pay a “cleaning fee” of $250 just so the Rhode Island police wouldn’t come and pick us up (sorry, dad.) Needless to say, I was still a bit iffy about the whole situation but I had to convince myself that I wasn’t breaking the law this time.
Shortly after, I got a call from a guy by the name of Mike, a tour guide from My 420 Tours, who welcomed me to Denver and asked me to meet him in front of the hotel. I walked outside only to be greeted fondly by Mike and our tour driver, Tyreek. I was pretty impressed that Mike was able to answer all of the questions that kept popping into my head along the drive about dispensaries, grow houses, and the marijuana laws in Colorado.
Our first stop on the tour was Buddy Boy Brand dispensary in Denver. Unlike the first dispensary I went to, I didn’t have to wait in line and was offered help from a budtender right away. He showed me all of the different cannabis strains and explained how marijuana topicals worked as well.
Again, I was completely overwhelmed with so many questions racing through my mind that I needed a helmet just to keep my head securely attached. I would have said my cannabis knowledge is above par, but evidently, there was a LOT I didn’t know.
The staff at Buddy Boy were awesome enough to let me snap some shots inside their dispensary:
Tour de Grow house
Before my grow house tour, I had never seen a grow operation so massive in my life. Until then, I had only seen 5-10 plants, at most, that my friend in Rhode Island was growing legally as a caregiver, and even that I was impressed with. But this grow house? This was a bit more intense than my friend’s tiny apartment closet.
A member of the grow house staff showed Mike and I around while explaining the entire growing process. We got to poke our heads into a few of the insulated grow rooms and the smell, as well as my allergies, was particularly overwhelming.
Towards the end of the tour, we entered a back room where all of the harvesting action was taking place. There were so many marijuana buds on the floor that I had to watch where I was going with each step. The process, to me, appeared to be pretty quick and the grow house workers were some of the most diligent workers I had ever seen. I asked two of the
I asked two of the harvesters, “Are you guys allowed to smoke in here?” With a smile one responded, “No, we’re not allowed to medicate on the job.” Talk about torture. But still, these guys were legit, and I would love to hire them to clean up my backyard.
Here are some shots I took along the tour:
By the end of the tour, I felt like a cannabis connoisseur who just completed a marijuana 101 course. I learned so many new things, from harvesting plants to investing in the marijuana industry. I can’t thank My 420 Tours enough for giving me this incredible experience, and this trip is certainly one that I will never forget, no matter how much cannabis I consume.
