Marijuana And Modern Day Religion. Is It A Sin?
Most conservative people and religious people frown upon the use of marijuana. We take a look at marijuana and religion from a modern perspective.
It is safe to say most conservative people and religious people frown upon the use of marijuana. The main reason sprouts from the religious theory that you must ‘treat your body like a temple of God’, because He gave you your body and therefore, you should consider it holy.
What about the Bible?
Most, if not all religious beliefs derive from the bible or a sacred book of some sort, in these books there are “guidelines” so to speak, that must be followed to gain access into heaven. People take these guidelines very serious and apply them in their day to day lives.
Religion is a personal thing
Even with facts presented, the faith that one has in his/her religious beliefs seem to surpass the plain truth. Since religion is a personal thing, the beliefs that come with it should be treated as opinions, but respected. When it comes to smoking marijuana, who hasn’t come across a judgmental person who usually comes from a strong religious background? Although you may have your own relationship with God, for some reason the judgment makes you feel like a sinner.
Now, I know I’m not the only one who knows people that are pro-marijuana but also attend church and are overall decent human beings. And sure, there are people who do harm to others and themselves that just so happen to smoke marijuana. With that being said, shouldn’t the actions of a person be judged, rather than the plant alone?
There is an hypocrisy
The fact is, cannabis has multiple medicinal benefits and is not only used recreationally. An all natural plant that has been growing on earth for centuries. Cannabis was and still is used for making rope, cloth, paper, and fuel. It is almost hypocritical to say that God created the earth and everything in it, then discriminate someone who just so happens to find that one of his creations is quite lovely.
Initially in the Christianity religion, the love you receive from Jesus Christ is all you need to satisfy your desires and overlook your temptations. That is without a doubt a beautiful theory. But if these desires are based on a person’s health, like the desire to fight cancer, the desire to fight anxiety, or even depression, what better way to give thanks to the creator by appreciating and taking advantage of the herb that was placed on this planet.
What can I do?
If you are religious and feel ashamed or guilty about consuming marijuana, find it in yourself to break free of labels society placed on you. Sin defines evil and evil is just as natural as good; Poison ivy is natural but harmful, cannabis is natural and helpful.
At the end of the day whether you are religious or not, somebody is going to judge you. Tradition is inevitable and history is marked in stone, but there is always time to make new history. Faith and facts will forever collide, and really the only way to help this dilemma is to start with yourself. If you are a cannabis consumer take pride in showing the world you are a good person and can prove this through your actions and not your personal consumption.
