Most active in the 1970s and 80s, Marks was an Oxford graduate with degrees in nuclear physics and philosophy.  In his lifetime, he smuggled over 30 tonnes of cannabis from multiple countries, including into Ireland, England, and the United States.

Marks has been described as “the most sophisticated drug baron of all time” and used a total of 43 aliases over the course of his career. He became known as “Mr. Nice” after he took on the name of Donald Nice. He published an autobiography under the same name in 1996, after he was released from the Terre Haute Federal Corrections Facility in Indiana.
