If you can remember when MTV actually played music, you aren’t exactly a spring chicken anymore. Growing up, we could actually watch hours of music videos. We also had our own style of content, from Real World to Daria. But one day, MTV grew up too fast. Whether it was Carson Daly trying to be a talk show host or just the nature of the beast, our free-range childhood was gone. But on August 1, at 6 am, exactly 35 years to the day that the network first debuted, (now I feel old), it is going back to its old-school roots.
MTV is taking us back to the old-school
MTV issues a press release saying they plan to rebrand VH1 Classic as MTV Classic, focusing on the early 90’s through early 00’s. From Pimp my Ride to Punk’d, Cribs to Clone High, all the greats are coming back.
Amid a huge decline in viewing audiences, MTV is trying to rebuild its brand with young adults. The things that made them great might just bring in a whole new generation. But plenty of original viewers are sure to return for a taste of misspent youth as well. So get ready for a blast from the past, because the 90’s seem to be making a comeback!
1. Do you remember your first crush?
Remember that special girl who turned your idea of attractive inside out? She made you fall in love with girls in combat boots, and never appreciate cheerleaders the same way again? The original hipster, Daria deadpanned her way through life and took us all along for the ride.
2. The first music critics we cared about
These guys, well, let’s just say they had a lot of time on their hands. Reviewing music videos, eating nachos, and getting expelled. Not exactly role models, but that was the point.
3. Lifestyles of the rich and…
Who cares about stuffy old aristocrats? We grew up idolizing the success of people we actually paid attention to! Cribs showed us what it meant to make it in the world of music.
4. The Real World
What happens when you put a bunch of poorly suited roommates with raging hormones and personality issues in one house? Chaos. This show prepared us for life on the outside of our parent’s house and the inevitable insanity of roommates.
5. We all knew one of these guys
