How To Tell Your Parents That You Smoke Weed
From choosing the right place and the right time to expecting the unexpected, here are some tips for coming out of the cannabis closet to your parents.
Telling your parents that you smoke weed can go one of two ways. Either they’ll totally accept it, or they won’t. But don’t let your fear of how they might react stop you from sharing something you enjoy with mom and pop. The hardest part of the whole thing is working up the nerve to tell them. But once you finally fess up, it’ll feel as if several pounds have been lifted off your shoulders. From choosing the right place and the right time to expecting the unexpected, here are six steps of advice to come out of the cannabis closet to your parents.
1. Explain how weed helps you
If mom and dad demand an explanation, then give it to them. Tell your folks all about how the herb benefits you. More than likely, the last thing they’ll want to hear is that you only do it to get high. So, provide them with a logical reason for your pot use, such as pain management. Doing so could very well cause them to have a change of heart.
2. Timing and location is everything
You know what they say, there’s a time and place for everything. When it comes time to sit down with your parents and have “the weed talk,” this is especially important to keep in mind.
First of all, you should catch them when they’re in a good mood. Also, choose a day when they don’t have too much going on. As far as the location goes, it’s probably not the best idea to pick one where a ton of people are around, mainly because it’s no one else’s business. Oh, and never confess over the phone. They’ll respect you a lot more if you communicate with them in person.
3. Spread the knowledge
Your folks may or may not know much about the cannabis plant. If they don’t, then teach them! Not only will it show them that you know your stuff, but it’ll also help them understand why you love it so much. From its medical uses in history to the many ways you can consume it, there sure is a lot to learn.
4. Expect the unexpected
There’s no telling how your parents will react when you come out of the weed closet. Sure, they could get really upset and fly off the handle. On the other hand, they might be pot smokers themselves. Like you, they might still be stuck in the closet themselves. You never know, but you can prepare for it to go either way.
5. If need be, leave out the incriminating details
Of course, no parent wants to see their child behind bars. Depending on where you live, pot can put you there, which will alarm your folks when you open up about smoking weed. While you should let them know your thoughts on legalization, admitting that you’re breaking the law might cause a negative reaction. So if necessary, leave that part out. You can tell them that you’ve used before to start and go from there.
6. Respect their opinion
The fact of the matter is, there will always be someone out there who is against weed. If that someone happens to be your parents, it’s not the end of the world. Even if they don’t agree with you on the subject, you were honest, and that goes a long way. Just like you want them to accept you, make sure you accept them too. Later on down the road, they could change their views, so don’t give up just yet.
