There’s a new service from Sega that allows you to play classic Sega titles on your phone, which will have new games added every two weeks, and is free to use.
Sega and Sonic and the whole gang
That’s right, as of today, you can download and play classic Sega games from your youth. Best of all, you won’t need to buy a new (or old) console, as it is made possible by a service that has just gone live.
The new service is called Sega Forever, which is a lineup of classic games that will be available on both iOS and Android, all for free. Of course, as it is free content, there will be ads. But you can pay $1.99 to turn off the ads and pretend it’s the Nineties.
For its launch, there are five Sega Genesis games available, which are Sonic the Hedgehog, Comix Zone, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon and Phantasy Star II.
The gaming giant has re-released the classic games before with the plug-and-play Sega Mega Drive Classic Game Console, however, this is the first time they will offer such a selection of games for smartphones. Given time, the collection will grow to include nearly every game ever released, from the Master System to the Mega Drive and more.
Even though the graphics and gameplay will allow you to relive your youth, the service will have some modern features that players now expect, such as cloud saves, online leaderboards and even the option of using a Bluetooth controller.
As the Sega Forever collection expands through months and years, it will include both official emulations and ported games that pan all console eras, each adapted specifically for mobile devices while remaining faithful to the original games.
