The Unbelievable Reason This Cannabist Activist Was Arrested
One man has been trying a novel approach to changing public sentiment about marijuana. His story, and his dream, should be an inspiration to us all.
One man has been trying a novel approach to changing public sentiment about marijuana in Canada. His name is Dana Larsen, and he was just arrested in Calgary for giving away free cannabis seeds. His story, and his dream, should be an inspiration to us all.
One man’s dream, one million seeds
Dana Larsen is the creator of the movement Overgrow Canada, and has been giving away 1 million cannabis seeds, (that’s right, free seeds!) to anyone who wants them in packs of 10 or 100. His goal is to make cannabis so prevalent across the nation that it will be forced into public consciousness, fostering realization of the nature of the plant, and engendering positive public sentiment.
All he wants in return for the free seeds is for recipients to plant them in conspicuous places, so the plants will be viewable by the public. He suggests front yards, gardens, and public places where they won’t be mowed over before they have a chance to get big. To get the seeds by mail, Larsen asked for a $5 dollar donation to help cover shipping costs.
Going to jail
He has even gone so far as to go on tour to help spread the word, and the seeds, across his beloved nation. The tour kicked off in Kelowna on April 5th, and then moved on to Calgary on the 6th, where he was arrested. The tour had dates planned for
- Niagara Falls
- St Catherines
- and Halifax
Now it is uncertain when, or even if the tour will continue, let alone the movement. For Dana, however, there is little doubt that he will continue to fight to bring this wonderful plant out of the shadows.
A philosophy of peace
Dana has called on the people to help change the laws through peaceful protest. On his site, he wrote:
“As Canada moves towards legalization, it’s good to remember how we got here. It is civil disobedience against the unjust pot prohibition laws that has gotten us to the verge of legalization. We must keep up that momentum as we enter into the final stretch of our cannabis campaign. This is why I am calling on all freedom-loving Canadians to grow a cannabis victory garden this spring!”
“…We must not wait around to see if maybe Trudeau will be kind enough to let us grow a few cannabis plants at home. We must seize the moment, seize our freedom and plant our victory gardens!
It could be years before the Liberals come up with all their new rules and regulations, permits and punishments for legal cannabis. Our movement has never been based on patiently waiting for politicians to grant us freedom. Cannabis liberation is about peaceful defiance, and standing up against unjust laws, not only with words, but with concrete action.”
Dedicated to freedom
Dana Larsen is an activist and author of a number of books, such as Green Buds and Hash, Cannabis in Canada: The Illustrated History, & Harry Pothead and the Marijuana Stone.
