There’s Talk Of Banning Cannabis Gummies, So Here Are Our 5 Faves
Many cannabis gummies look identical to the gummies you might find in the candy aisle, and gummies with cannabis doses in them are often brightly colored.
Lawmakers in Colorado are having to adjust medical cannabis laws as they go, learning from mistakes and closing loopholes. One issue that has Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper particularly concerned is edibles. It looks like cannabis gummies will be getting an overhaul to prevent them from resembling children’s candy.
Why the fuss over cannabis gummies?
Gov. Hickenlooper makes a very compelling argument in his State of the State address:
Back in the day, candy cigarettes desensitized kids to the dangers of tobacco, and today, pot-infused gummy bears send the wrong message to our kids about marijuana.
He’s right. If we want cannabis to be taken seriously, we can’t afford to make edible dosing appear juvenile. Many gummies look virtually identical to the gummies you might find in the candy aisle, and suckers with cannabis doses in them are often brightly colored and festive.
The makers of many cannabis gummies feel that the change could have unintended consequences for the gummy market. They have a point. Commercial gummy candy is made in rings, worms, balls, cubes, berries, bears, and thousands of other shapes and every color imaginable. What shapes and colors will be left for infusers to use?
Festive food isn’t a bad thing in and of itself, but as adults, we can show a little more restraint about what we allow on commercial shelves. They don’t sell to minors or even allow them on the premises, but once the treats are taken home, the potential for mistaken ingestion is far too easy.
It isn’t just a hypothetical situation, either. There have been numerous cases in Colorado of children, or even unwitting adults, having to go to the hospital after eating infused treats without knowing. While non-fatal, cannabis dosing (especially when one candy is a full adult dose in a bag of dozens of candies) can be very uncomfortable.
The greatest gummies ever
Here at HERB, we promote safe, responsible use of cannabis for health and wellbeing, but we also love the art of cooking with cannabis. To honor the (potentially) soon to be gone gummy, here are 5 of our all time favorites. They may not be gone forever. Just make them an ugly color and in the shape of a vegetable or math book: I know my kids will run in fear.
1. Sour Bhotz
These simple, all natural gummies are made in Oregon, and only have five ingredients! With no artificial colors, you know you are getting everything you want, with nothing you don’t. Bursting with flavors of pineapple, mango, orange, green apple, raspberry, watermelon, & grape, they are infused with “The Clear Concentrate” at a whopping 75mg dose each. Don’t try them all at once.
2. Space Gems
All organic, vegetarian gummies made from ice water hash and locally sourced in Humbolt county. These low dose edibles are great when you want to start off lightly and tailor your dose. Ideal for first time edible users. They come in both sweet and sour flavors, carry 10mg of THC each, and are coated in organic sugar.
3. Key lime dinosaurs
These delicious gummies hit the spot with old school flavors like key lime & cake batter, root beer float, strawberry kiwi, lemon pound cake, and PB & J. Each one has 75mg of THC, and they come in a variety of shapes.
4. True Bionic Treats gummies
What I love about these gummies is that the dosing is by the pack, not the individual piece, so you can enjoy each moment after satisfying moment with these fantastic flavors and not have to pace yourself. The pack has a total dose of 115mg, and they come in lots of fun shapes for those of us who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, including spaceships, rayguns, aliens, and old school cartoon characters like Ren & Stimpy.
5. HERB do-it-yourself gummies
The best edibles are the ones you make yourself, and at HERB, we have a great recipe for cannabis gummies for you to do just that. Best of all, not only do you control the dosage, but you can make them in any shape and color you can imagine. From festive and fun to low-key and responsible, make them suit you without any compromises.
