Every year on April 12th we observe National Grilled Cheese Day, because who wouldn’t want to celebrate everyone’s favorite comfort food? According to food historians, grilled cheese sandwiches are actually an ancient food not only relished in the United States, but enjoyed in many cultures around the world.
The history of grilled cheeses sandwiches
Grilled cheese sandwiches go way back, like, waaay back.
Did you know that the Ancient Romans were the first civilization to make a cooked bread and cheese sandwich? Seriously, I’m not making this stuff up.
We’ve learned a lot from the Ancient Romans—from our political systems to architecture and even theater, but where would be without grilled cheese sandwiches? A world I don’t even want to think about…
The French adapted the grilled cheese sandwich and made it their own by adding grilled ham, or what they like to call “Croque Monsieur.” In Switzerland, it is customary to make grilled cheese by melting the cheese and toasting the bread separately before combining them. Interesting tactic that I may even try myself.
Yet, the classic American grilled cheese sandwich didn’t emerge in the United States until the 1920s, during a time when cheese and bread were extremely affordable. During World War II, the United States government described Navy cooks broiling “American cheese filling sandwiches.” Perhaps if Americans shared their sacred grilled cheese recipe with the Germans things might have been different.
