FACT: Tobacco kills, THC heals. In the age-old debate between marijuana and tobacco, we take a closer look at the differences between the ingredients in one of the most mystic substances known to man: SMOKE.

Exhibit A: Tabac Of All Trades

As I preach to the cannabis community choir about the differences between marijuana and tobacco smoke, one chart serves as appropriate introduction:

Tobacco is a killer yet mostly legal and widely accepted all over the world. People seem to hardly bat an eye when a person lights a cigarette. It may be the nicotine, it may be the flavor, but it’s definitely not the knowledge. Just look at the chemicals in the common cigarette.

What do these chemicals matter? The key word is CARCINOGENS. The common cigarette has enough strange ingredients to start up an amateur chemistry lab. These are the chemicals activated when the fire touches the stick and the clouds of smoke enter our lungs. Most of the ingredients in a cigarette are known to cause lung, throat, and mouth cancer.

Tobacco companies themselves are required by law to advertise these harmful side-effects on the labels of their product. Their effect on the body and the mind seems to be mild in the short-term, maybe even therapeutic to some, but, in the long run, these are the chemicals that raise blood pressure and severely damage those vital organs like the lungs and the heart.

Referred to by some as the ‘healing of the nations’ or the ‘herb of well-being’, and most recently; ‘God’s vagina’, marijuana is a sacred plant. This plant contains so much good stuff that we can hardly contain ourselves in finding more creative and tastier ways to consume it. In the broadest sense, THC and CBD are the key components. These compounds form part of an extensive chain of cannabinoids that our brain responds to. These cannabinoids work in many ways throughout the body depending on the extent of their activation and their abundance in a particular strain.

Some strains of marijuana contain higher levels of THC and/or higher or lower levels of CBD. It is these elements that are activated when the fire is implemented. Their effect on the body and mind has been at the center of  decades-long scientific scrutiny. Time and time again the research has shown that cannabinoids destroy cancer cells. Let’s have a look at those puppies:

So, What’s The Difference?

In one word: Effect. The body’s reaction to the chemical compounds of the substance being consumed serves as evidence of this claim. Smoke a cigarette and see how you feel. Feelings here can be mixed in the public audience because tobacco serves to some as a form of relaxation and to others simply as a bad habit or an ill-formed addiction. Whatever the case, the physical effects of tobacco smoke seem to only strain the body and bring physical harm to its components.

On the other hand, cannabis can be consumed in ways that cause no strain on the body’s vital organs. Forms of consumption may vary, but the effects remain the same: Hungry, Happy, Sleepy, to say the least. Beyond those therapeutic effects lie the medicinal and physical ones, effects widely-known to have positive effects on the body and mind.

The choice is yours when taking the ceremonial ”smoke-break”, but remember one thing; Effects will ensue. The biggest difference is ultimately determined in our minds if we ask ourselves this question: How do I want to feel right now?
