The results of a recent study show that McDonald’s is the number one fast food restaurant of choice for consumers – of weed and fast food – in legal states. The study, which was conducted by Green Market Report and Consumer Research Around Cannabis, found that 43 percent of the respondents to the survey chose to consume food from the Golden Arches after consuming their weed.
They’re lovin’ it
Green Market Report conducted the online survey, which had 27,500 respondents, in 25 markets with legal recreational weed. The survey found that 8.5 percent of the respondents had purchased from a dispensary. In the past four weeks, with 43 percent of those consumers also eating at McDonald’s.
In second place was Taco Bell, at 18 percent, and Wendy’s in third with 17.8 percent. Wendy’s just beat Burger King, which was at 17.6 percent. Further down the list was Subway with 8.7 percent, then KFC with 5.5 percent. Following KFC, it was Arby’s, Chick-Fil-A, Jack-In-The-Box and Carl’s Jr.
The big winner
It’s easy to see that the company is aware of its unique position among those who get elevated. Just recently, the company erected a billboard in New Mexico, which received the wrong kind of attention and saw it taken down. The billboard that had a photo of a breakfast burrito, with the text “Usually when you roll something this good, it’s illegal.”
The popularity of McDonald’s might not be due to its menu, though, but more to do with the amount of restaurants. “McDonald’s wins by virtue of the sheer number of locations – by default, really,” said Jeff Stein, Vice President of Consumer Research Around Cannabis.
Those competitors which better understanding cannabis users and their consumer habits can certainly close the gap by integrating what they learn through their marketing efforts.
But Taco Bell is working to address that, by partnering up with the ride-sharing company Lyft, which has resulted in Taco Mode – that is only available in Orange County, California. Anyone who is a regular smoker will know that Taco Bell has been a favorite with late-night tokers.
