How To Make Weed Stem Tea In 5 Steps

Plant scraps turned into a soothing sip.

If you’re like us, you tend to throw out your weed stems.

It might be time to rethink that toss.

Cannabis stem tea transforms what might seem like waste into a wellness brew. This tea is far more than a savvy use of leftovers – it has various potential benefits and is ideal for those seeking more milder effects of cannabis.

Our simple 5-step recipe will guide you through crafting your own soothing concoction of weed stem tea.

Does Weed Tea Get You High

If your weed tea uses stems from a THC-rich strain, then yes, you can get a mild high.

Stems generally have a lower THC content than actual cannabis buds or flowers. Their potency will largely depend on the potency and quality of the original flower they came from. Higher-quality cannabis usually means more potent stems and a stronger high.

You can also maximize the THC extracted from these stems by decarboxylating them and adding a fatty substance like milk to the boiling tea.

Decarboxylate your stems

For maximum potency, you should decarboxylate the stems, which can help activate cannabinoids like THC and help them infuse more easily into the tea.

The boiling water isn’t exactly the right temperature for full decarboxylation.

To decarboxylate:

  1. Preheat oven to 240°F (115°C).

  2. Spread stems evenly on a baking sheet and break them into smaller pieces if they aren’t already in smaller bits.

  3. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 30-40 minutes. Halfway through, stir the stems.

  4. Once done baking, the stems should be light to medium brown and may smell hay-ish. Remove the stems from the oven and let them cool before using.

Use a binding agent like milk or coconut oil

To better extract THC, use binding agents like milk or coconut oil. THC is fat-soluble, meaning it requires a fatty substance to be fully absorbed by the body.

Ready to brew something special? Here’s our herb-worthy recipe for weed stem tea that you can customize to your taste buds.

Ingredients:

  • Decarboxylated weed stems (about 1-2 grams; see above for preparation details)
  • 1 liter (about 4 cups) of water
  • A fatty binding agent (such as a tablespoon of coconut oil or unsalted butter) to help extract THC
  • Optional: Any regular tea bag (herbal or black tea for added flavor)
  • Optional sweeteners: honey, sugar, or stevia
  • Optional: A slice of lemon, a few mint leaves, or a cinnamon stick for flavor enhancement

Instructions:

  1. Boil Water: Bring the water to a boil in a small saucepan.

  2. Add Fats and Stems: Once boiling, add your fatty binding agent and the decarboxylated weed stems to the water. Reduce heat to a simmer. The longer you simmer, the stronger your tea, but aim for 10-15 minutes.

  3. Infuse Flavors: If using, drop in a tea bag of your choice along with any additional flavor enhancers like lemon, mint, or cinnamon stick to jazz up the flavor.

  4. Simmer: Allow everything to simmer gently together for about 10 to 15 minutes, letting the flavors meld, and the THC infuse into the fatty base.

  5. Strain and Enjoy: Remove the saucepan from the heat. Using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, strain the mixture into your favorite mug to catch all the stems (and other additions, if used). Your weed stem tea is ready to sip on.

Optional: If you prefer your tea sweetened, you can add honey, sugar, or artificial sweeteners like stevia here.

Cannabis Stem Tea Benefits

There are many reasons people set sail to an online or local dispensary to purchase cannabis products. Cannabis has long given an array of benefits to its users, used for centuries as a medicinal and recreational herb.

Along with the ready-made products you can buy, DIY home infusions such as stem tea also offer many potential benefits.

These include:

  • Gentler effects – Unlike smoking or munching on edibles, weed stem tea effects are generally more mild and gradual. This makes it a great choice for those wanting a subtler high.

  • Pain relief – Mild headaches and joint pain may be alleviated following the consumption of the weed stem brew.

  • Digestive aid – Cannabis has long been recognized for helping soothe digestive discomfort. Consuming the stem tea can help settle your stomach and potentially reduce nausea.

  • Stress reduction – The calming effects of cannabis can be well-translated in its stem tea. Drinking its tea form can help ease in-the-moment stress.

  • Better sleep – Weed stem tea may have relaxing properties that help you get into the right headspace for sleep.
