Few plants can make you smile quite like marijuana does. After one puff or a brownie or two, you suddenly find yourself a little beady-eyed with a huge grin on your face. But, why does cannabis give us the giggles? Medically speaking, there may be several reasons why weed makes you laugh.
Weed Is a Natural Mood-Lifter
Marijuana’s powerful effect on mood plays a major role in why it makes us giggle. Turns out, cannabis lifts your spirits much in the same way as a night of great sex or an extra rewarding run. This is all due to THC’s ability to mimic our body’s own natural endocannabinoids. Specifically, the endocannabinoid called anandamide.
Simply put, anandamide is our brain’s natural THC. After exercise, anandamide levels naturally surge in our bodies. The endocannabinoid can also help turn us on, even when we’re not really in the mood… meaning cannabis help your sex drive.
Basically, the chemical makes us feel euphoric, eases pain, and gives us a sense of bliss. When you smoke weed, THC connects to the same places that anandamide does. This amplifies the blissful, euphoric sensation we would normally only get postcoitus or after hitting the gym.
What are we more likely to do when we feel this sort of relaxed, euphoric happiness? Laugh, smile, eat and sleep.
Cannabinoids like THC and CBD are also proven anti-depressants. Even when you’re feeling the totally blue, the ability of cannabinoids to mimic the natural effects of uplifting anandamide will help you crack a smile.
Marijuana May Boost Your Brain’s Metabolism
Metabolism doesn’t only refer to your stomach’s ability to break down food. Your brain cells need to break down their own kind of food, too. It’s common knowledge that some people have a faster metabolism than others. It’s lesser known, however, that poor chemical metabolism in your brain can have a drastic effect on your mood and emotions.
Weed may help. In a 2010 review Researchers at King’s College of London found that there is increased metabolic activity in regions responsible for emotion among cannabis users. These regions are known as the frontal lobe and the anterior cingulate cortex.
By increasing your brain’s chemical metabolism, marijuana helps the brain break down vitamins and other natural chemical goodies you need to stay happy. For example, if common vitamin B-5 isn’t being properly used by the brain, you will lack the neurotransmitters you need to maintain a good mood. The same thing goes for many other vitamins, endocannabinoids, and vital neurotransmitters (like mood-boosing Seratonin).
By contrast, poor metabolic activity in these brain regions puts you at risk for mood disorders like Bipolar Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder. What does all this have to do with laughing? Cannabis gives your brain a chance at breaking down what it needs for a happy, good mood.
The More You Laugh, The Better You Feel!
So let’s have weed for every meal! Jk. But no, really. Even the novice cannabis consumer has probably experienced a situation like this: you’re watching a movie and a friend makes a silly comment, and all of a sudden you just cannot stop laughing. By the time you finally can catch a breath, you may have even forgotten what you were laughing about in the first place.
When you smoke weed, you’re more likely to laugh because you’re simply in a laughing mood. But once those giggles get going, keeping coming is actually really good for you. We’re not kidding when we say that laughter is one of the best medicines.
Just look at some of these health benefits:
- Reduces damaging stress hormones
- Increases your body’s immune response
- Decreases pain
- Lowers your risk of cardiovascular disease
- Increases the quality of life in cancer patients
Cannabis Encourages Honest Laughter
Like yawning, laughter is contagious. However, not all laughter is the same. In her studies comparing real versus fake laughter, Neuroscientist Sophie Scott discovered that genuine laughter in adults is more likely to occur in settings that are socially stimulating. A what’s more socially stimulating than enjoying some fine herb with some quality companions?
Giggling over a bowl with a partner or a group of friends not only encourages bonding, but it allows you to collectively lower your responses to stress. Scott’s research found couples who laughed honestly while undergoing or reminiscing on stressful situations were more likely to stay together for far longer than their more negative counterparts.
Lesson learned? Couples who smoke together stay together.
“The giggles” are by far one of the marijuana plant’s more enjoyable effects. The precise reasons on why cannabis causes you to crack up for long periods of time are still unknown. But, regardless, we do know that weed does works wonders on your mood. We hope the next time find yourself in front of an infused-meal or a perfectly rolled joint, you take a moment to sit back, relax, and enjoy laughing hysterically at whatever suits your fancy.
