Redman’s mom accidentally discovered some iconic cannabis history from back in the day. A video posted by Redman on his Instagram account on January 6 shows the rapper inspecting several dime bags that his mom unearthed while cleaning the house.

“My moms just found this bud. This bud has to be at least twenty years old,” he narrates while filming his mother’s hand spreading out the dime bags.

“Don’t put my name in it, period!” his mother adds, jokingly. 

Redman gives more context as to why the accidental discovery is important. It turns out, it’s a huge part of the conjoined history that cannabis and East Coast hip-hop share, with one dime bag in particular garnering special attention.

The video shows a triangular dime bag that came from a retired weed dealer named Branson, who Redman referenced in his 2007 song, “Branson Branson.” 

“You know what that bag is right there. This bag has history. This is Biggie Smalls. This is The Lox. This is Cam’ron. This is Lil Cease. This is Noreaga. Official, twenty years old, and the bud is still in it!”

He gives more context to the importance of the bag, for both himself and hip hop.

“If you don’t know what this bag is, it’s from one of the East Coast riders of marijuana,” he says, “Branson, baby. That’s an official Branson bag.”

Apparently, Redman is one of many rappers who has plugged Branson.

Further research reveals that Branson Belchie, a sommelier from Harlem, who used to sell weed to a seriously impressive client base including the likes of those mentioned by Redman. One article credits him for introducing top-shelf liquors to the likes of P. Diddy and Biggie. Another claims that he inspired the character Sampson in Dave Chapelle’s iconic film Half Baked.
