Are you ready for the next level of interactive gaming? One word is taking the world by storm… again. Pokémon Go! Discover these amazing creatures in a whole new world. Yours. The game layers the virtual game world onto our own via GPS, allowing you to search for Pokémon wherever you go.
1. As if you don’t stare at your phone enough
Pokémon fans are raving over the newest game for Android and iPhone devices. To play, you just do what you normally do. Go out, walk around, live life, and stumble upon hidden creatures. The Poké-map overlays reality on your screen, and will vibrate your device, letting you know if wild Pokémon are nearby. Now even more people will be looking at the world through a screen instead of their eyes.
2. Giving you an excuse to get cultured
What makes this game stand out is the way it impacts the way you live. Pokémon gyms are strategically located in cultural hubs, like museums, art galleries, public parks, monuments, and historical markers. So while playing, you also expand your world.
3. Forcing you to visit the great outdoors
The game’s layering of the real world even applies to how you find certain Pokémon types. Want a water-based Pokémon? You will have to go to a lake, pond, or river.
4. Making you exercise
Even better, or worse, depending on how you take it, the game encourages exercise. To hatch eggs you find, you have to walk a set distance. The farther the distance, the rarer the Pokémon!
5. Allegiance and a badge
The game even offers a way to game without always checking your device. You can get the Pokémon Go Plus unit, which can be worn on the wrist, and connects via Bluetooth to your device to notify you of in-game events, like sightings, using an LED light and vibrations. Just like that Star Trek pin that hardcore fans wear.
6. Making you play at odd hours
The game in just a few days has seen a rush of overwhelming excitement. That excitement has overwhelmed the servers almost from the moment the game went live. Like rush hour traffic, the most difficult times to log in are lunch time and after work on the east coast, as many people try to catch some fun in their spare time.
Both Nintendo and Niantic are working frantically to handle the sheer volume of users, so be patient as the game catches up to you.
7. A truly unique experience
The game has already created one of the most dynamic gaming experiences in history. Not all of those experiences have been positive, however. People injure themselves by not paying attention to terrain and obstacles. Australian police have actually had to warn people not to enter the police station in search of Pokémon. Washington’s Department of Transportation has warned the public against “pokémoning while driving.”
A 19-year-old in Riverton, Wyoming who went searching for water-type Pokémon in her hometown river had quite a shock. She stumbled upon a dead body by accident. Police don’t suspect foul play in the incident at this time. Nevertheless, I have to wonder if the Pokémon near the scene of the crime will be taken into custody.
I am just waiting for the news story where someone stumbles on a guerilla cannabis crop in the woods playing the game. I also wonder if the dead guy was also looking for Pokémon.
8. The Pokémon Go lesson
Pokémon Go will send you out into the world, to experience a whole new level of gaming, and life. That being said, if you absolutely “gotta catch ’em all,” do so with some common sense. Don’t try looking for Psyduck in the ghetto at 2am. Don’t swim with your phone looking for Squirtle in the local Water Reclamation plant. Don’t try to catch Charizard in traffic. Remember, it may be awesome, but it is still just a game. Play safe.
