Nonpsychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) is an amazing antidote for anxiety. In fact, CBD may be even better at controlling anxiety than psychoactive THC. While THC can make anxiety worse in some cases, CBD feels like being enveloped by a warm, calming blanket. The best part? There is no known way to overdose on CBD and it does not impair cognitive function. Here are 12 everyday anxieties that CBD can soothe.

1. Coffee jitters

There’s a reason why coffee entrepreneurs have started infusing their beans with CBD. The anxiolytic and anti-inflammatory properties of the cannabinoid put a halt to the uncomfortable jitters and anxiety that come with too much coffee.

Interestingly enough, both CBD and caffeine engage with adenosine receptors. Adenosine is a neurotransmitter that tells your body when to wake up and when to wind down.

Caffeine can be anxiety-provoking because it blocks adenosine receptors, and prevents them from functioning. This means that other exciting, more stimulating neurotransmitters go unchecked, as calming adenosine is blocked.  CBD has the opposite effect, it activates adenosine receptors, putting the breaks back on excitatory brain chemicals.

There has yet to be solid research looking at the ways both CBD and caffeine work in the body. Yet, you may find that the cannabinoid nicely mellows out the caffeine rush.

2. Obsessing over hypothetical situations

Sometimes, it can be difficult to be present. Our thoughts are entertaining and it’s human nature to grab onto them and run. Unfortunately, our bodies don’t have the capacity to recognize when a story is real versus all in our heads. This means that we have a physiological response to our worries, whether we like it or not.

This means that we have a physiological response to our worries, whether we like it or not. Obsessing over a worry or story causes both physical and mental stress.

CBD can help with this. Like other anxiety medications, CBD has a strong calming effect. However, it isn’t overly sedative and does not come with a host of uncomfortable side effects. The herbal compound is also a strong antioxidant, protecting your body from the physical effects of stress.

3. Social anxiety

Some people associate cannabis with increased social anxiety. While high doses of THC may be anxiety-provoking, CBD has the opposite effect. In a way, it’s like breathing in a breath of fresh air.

If you are nervous about going out in public or meeting a group of new people, the cannabinoid helps calm overexcitement in the brain. It produces a mild, mellow sensation that allows conversations to flow easily without added nervousness.

4. Awkward silence

So, you’re chatting with someone you don’t know very well and all of a sudden, the conversation just trails off. You find yourself stuck in the dreaded limbo of awkward silence. Rather than shuffle away feeling a bit bummed by your odd interaction, wouldn’t it be nice if you just didn’t care?

Or were able to laugh and appreciate the awkwardness for what it was?

Enter CBD. The herbal supplement that helps you not give AF. Though this is a subjective experience and is difficult to measure, things just seem a little bit lighter with cannabidiol. Awkwardness is only really painful if you perceive it as being so. CBD changes your perspective slightly, enabling you to be more comfortable with things as they are.

5. Tight deadlines

Short on time? Nah. Don’t worry. You got this. Stressing about a tight deadline only harms your performance and makes things take longer. It’s best just to forget about the stresses, sit down, and get things done. When you need a little help relaxing in a difficult situation, CBD is there to lend a hand.

Since it’s non-psychoactive, you won’t feel mentally bogged down or easily distracted. Rather, you’ll feel carefree yet focused enough to bang out some quality work.

6. Performance anxiety

Performance anxiety is often associated with sexual dysfunction. Yet, there are all sorts of situations where this might come into play. Whether you’re nervous for a job interview or concerned about engaging with a new partner, obsessing over how you’ll perform is a sure-fire way to run into difficulties.

Yet again, the anti-anxiety properties of CBD can come to the rescue. The compound cultivates all-around feel-good sensations of contentment. These mood-lifting properties help pull out of your own thoughts and back into the present. This means that you can give your partner (or anything else that demands performance) your full attention.

7. Anxious stomach

It’s not uncommon for those with anxiety to get nervous stomach. You become so stressed that your body slow down digestion and focuses energy on what you’re worried about. Fortunately, CBD reduces nausea and vomiting. A 2011 review found that the non-psychoactive cannabinoid has antiemetic effects in animal models.

In fact, it’s anti-nausea capabilities are so strong that it’s one of the cannabinoids recommended for chemotherapy patients. If CBD is good enough for those undergoing chemo, it’s probably strong enough for those anxiety-induced gastrointestinal issues.

8. Fear of flying

A little CBD oil before a long flight can definitely take the edge off. It may also help you catch some shut-eye, though it isn’t as powerful as its psychoactive relative, THC. Plop a few drops of CBD oil under your tongue before your flight.

If you’re flying domestic in the United States, CBD hemp oil like the Charlotte’s Web brand is perfectly legal to have. Though, make sure that the product is kept in the original container and that the bottle doesn’t exceed 3 ounces if you carry on your luggage.

For some, the fear of flying may be so intense that you need a little more support. However, if your phobia is only mild to moderate, uplifting CBD oil may help you let go of the anxiety and spend a little more time appreciating the fact that jet travel is a truly amazing human feat.

9. Public speaking

There’s an actual human study behind this one. In 2011, a research team treated 24 social anxiety patients with either 600mg of CBD or a placebo in a double-blind, randomized trial. The patients were then subjected to a public speaking test. At various times during the experiment,  scientists measured blood pressure, heart rate, skin conductance, and gave patients a mood evaluation.

Unsurprisingly, CBD outperformed the placebo in managing anxiety symptoms. The cannabinoid effectively reduced anxiety, boosted cognitive performance, and decreased alertness (anticipation, vigilance) than those given the placebo. This is excellent news for anyone with social anxiety but is especially awesome for those who struggle with public speaking.

As this research suggests, CBD actually improved cognitive performance during the presentation. This is a good sign that the herb may be preferable to common anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines, which can make people feel groggy, slow, and unmotivated.

10. Asking questions

The same study above can also explain why CBD may be a good option for those who are far too anxious to ask questions of their peers and colleagues. Many people feel uncomfortable speaking up when they have a question because they are afraid of looking stupid or feel insecure about their confusion.

In a way, this is a mild expression of social anxiety or a fear of speaking out in public. Since CBD takes the edge off of public speaking scenarios, those who struggle to have the confidence needed to ask questions may find that the cannabinoid helps them feel more at ease with the present situation.

Nipping this nervousness in the bud can also protect against increased anxiety later on, as you risk failing to understand the task you were presented with.

11. Exploring a new place

Admittedly, cannabis can have a negative impact on spatial memory. Though, there isn’t a whole lot of research on whether or not CBD impacts your short-term memory like THC does. Yet, after a little CBD treatment, it’s unlikely that you’ll care a whole lot about getting lost.

Exploring a new place or trying to find a new location can be anxiety provoking for some. It’s stressful if nothing looks familiar and you’re unsure about where to go. This stress and anxiety can be amplified if you’re running short on time. This is where the anti-anxiety and antipsychotic properties of CBD come in handy yet again.

Anecdotally, many people with PTSD have found relief with CBD. One of the most common symptoms of PTSD is hypervigilance. Hypervigilance is an exaggerated state of sensory awareness. Simply put, you are acutely aware of your environment, searching for possible threats.

General anxiety about a new place may not come close to the intense pull of hypervigilance. Yet, if CBD is powerful enough to work well in such extreme cases, it’s probably a safe bet that it will kick your day-to-day nervousness to the curb.

12. Countering anxiety from THC

This one is for all of the regular cannabis consumers out there. Sometimes you accidentally consume a little too much THC and you start to feel anxious. That’s alright, it happens to the best of us. But, if the cannabis-induced anxiety is annoying or is getting in the way of something you’d like to accomplish, a little CBD can help.

CBD reduces the psychoactivity of THC. Yep, that’s right. Research has shown that CBD is protective against the neurological effects of THC. So, the next time you puff on a sativa that is just a little too racy, switching to a high-CBD strain or taking a few drops of CBD oil will help you calm right down.
