Maximum flavor and potency, but saving your concentrates and your lungs? Here's how to do it.
Think you always need a hot banger to start dabbing? Think again. The cold start dab has offered a new technique for many dabbers worldwide. It brings a more flavorful and efficient alternative to traditional dabbing.
But what’s so special about this technique? Also known as reverse dabbing, a cold start dab eliminates the guesswork involved in timing your dabs while preserving the delicate terpenes that make premium concentrates so special. And with 7/10 around the corner, now’s the perfect time to try the cold start dab.
A cold start dab is exactly what it sounds like—starting your dab cold. While the standard dab rig setup requires heating an empty nail and waiting for cool-down times, the cold start method uses a clean and unheated nail.
The cold start technique begins by placing your concentrate into a completely cool quartz banger before applying any heat, then gradually warming the material until vapor appears.
There are three reasons why the cold start dab became popular:
By starting cold and gradually increasing the temperature, you can monitor your concentrates closely and stop heating at the exact moment they start to vaporize. No more wasted concentrates here.

To successfully execute your cold dabs, you’ll need these essentials in your toolkit:
Things to Consider: Quartz bangers are the best choice for cold start dabbing due to their superior heat distribution and retention. Bonus points if it’s a round-bottom banger, which lets concentrates pool in the middle for even heating. A directional airflow carb cap can also make all the difference, enhancing vapor production by creating ideal airflow patterns when dabbing.
Many dabbers prefer using live resin or other high-terpene concentrates with cold start methods. The low temperature preserves the precious compounds and gives these extracts their truest expression possible.

Start with a completely cool, clean nail—this is crucial for proper cold start technique. Using your dab tool, place a small amount of concentrate directly into the center of the unheated banger. The amount depends on your preferences, cannabis tolerance, and lung capacity. A rice grain to a small pea size is a good start. Make sure your nail is completely clean before loading to prevent any sticky residue from previous sessions from affecting flavor.
Place your carb cap on top of the loaded banger before applying any heat. This step is crucial because it creates a dome-like effect for vaporization and prevents any vapor from escaping. Position your torch flame at the bottom and lower sides of the banger.
Move the torch in a circular motion around the bottom of the banger for even heating, as this prevents hot spots that could burn your material. Just be sure to keep the flame about an inch away from the glass and maintain steady movement.
No carb cap? No problem. Check out our guide on DIY carb caps so you can still enjoy smooth, controlled airflow without compromising your dab.

Watch your concentrate closely as it heats up. When it starts to bubble and produce visible vapor, start inhaling while keeping the carb cap in place. Then, gently rotate the carb cap when inhaling to create good airflow and ensure you vaporize all of your material.
Continue heating if needed until you get your desired vapor density, but be careful not to overheat. The goal is to fully vaporize the concentrate without burning it, which preserves flavor and prevents harsh hits that can stress your lungs.

Start Small: Use less concentrate than you might with traditional dabbing, as the cold start method is more efficient and wastes less concentrate.
Clean Between Uses: Wipe your nail clean with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol while it’s still warm to prevent buildup that affects your next session.
Monitor Closely: Pay attention to how your specific concentrates behave during heating, as different consistency materials might need slight timing adjustments.
Practice Patience: Don’t rush the heating process. The gradual temperature increase is what makes cold start dabs superior to high-heat methods.
Multiple Hits: One cold start can often provide multiple hits as the concentrate slowly vaporizes, making it perfect for a longer, session-style experience.
Nope. It’s actually the opposite. Cold start dabs are less wasteful than traditional dabbing methods since the controlled heating prevents burning and lets you fully vaporize your material. It also leaves you with less unvaporized extract in your nail.
This comes down to personal preference. If you’re concerned about dab and lung capacity and prefer a more extended dabbing time, the cold start method might deliver the perfect dab you’re looking for. You’ll get better flavor preservation, more controlled temperature, reduced harshness, and less waste. However, some users still prefer traditional dabbing for larger hits or when speed is a priority.
We love a good round-bottom quartz banger for cold start dabs. They let the concentrates pool in the center and heat evenly. Quartz also retains heat well and provides a clean flavor, way better than titanium or ceramic options for this technique.
The beauty of cold start dabbing is that you don’t need to worry about specific temperatures. Simply heat until you see vapor production and bubbling, which is usually around 350-450°F. In this case, visual cues are way more reliable than temperature measurements.
Not necessarily, but the effects from cold start dabs might be more similar to the feeling of smoking cannabis and have prolonged effects. While the actual THC content doesn’t change, the enhanced terpene preservation can create a more full-spectrum effect (known as the entourage effect) that many users perceive as stronger or more satisfying than high-heat dabs.
