What Is SXSW Texas — And Why the 2026 Festival Is the Biggest One Yet

So, what exactly is SXSW in Austin, Texas? Short for South by Southwest, SXSW is an annual conference and festival founded in Austin, Texas, in 1987 that brings together thousands of professionals, artists, and creatives from around the world across five main tracks: Innovation & Tech, Film & TV, Music, Comedy, and Education.

The festival’s 1987 debut in Austin is no surprise, given that the city was later dubbed the Live Music Capital of the World. It grew into something much harder to categorize—part music discovery, part tech conference, part film festival, part cultural accelerator. The kind of event where you can catch an unknown band in a dive bar on Tuesday and run into a keynote speaker who’s reshaping an entire industry on Wednesday.

The SXSW festival in Texas runs March 12-18, 2026, and this year’s edition is the most ambitious yet. For the first time ever, Innovation, Film & TV, and Music are all happening simultaneously across the same seven days. No more staggered schedules. No more choosing between tracks. Everything is live at once.

Expect 850+ conference sessions covering tech, AI, brand and marketing, creator economy, sports, culture, and workplace. Over 4,400 musicians performing across 300+ live showcases. 375+ film and TV screenings. Four nights of comedy. 450 brand activations. An extra night of music was added specifically for the 40th anniversary. It’s a full week with no dead time.

One logistical note: the Austin Convention Center is out of the picture this year. In its place, SXSW is rolling out a pop-up village across downtown Austin with three Clubhouses for Innovation, Film & TV, and Music. Think of each Clubhouse as your home base for that track—information, exclusive merch, networking, and the kind of accidental run-ins that make SXSW what it is. The whole footprint is distributed across downtown, which honestly makes it feel more like Austin than a convention center ever did.

If you’re hitting SXSW, Austin, Texas, this year and want a home base that actually speaks your language, Cozy Cannabis is running a full week of programming that’s worth building your schedule around. Think live music, free dabs, THC-infused cocktails, flash tattoos, custom engravings, mushroom gummies, and DJ sets.

Thursday kicks things off with a Prissy P DJ set, giveaways, flower specials, THC-infused drinks, and free dabs courtesy of thisthat. Wunder is also on hand with mushroom gummy samples and promos if you want to add a little magic to the night.

Friday during the day, GRAV takes over for their High Lit-erary Society event—an immersive school-themed experience where the curriculum is heavy-hitting clouds. Happy hour open bar runs from 4 pm to 5 pm with THC-infused cocktails, exclusive giveaways, and sounds by Oh!V. At 5 pm, Professor Kellen leads a hands-on “class in session.” Every student walks away with GRAV goodies, and one overachiever gets crowned Teacher’s Pet with a special award. Vintage Jay and his band close out the day with a graduation performance at 6 pm.

Friday night goes darker with Friday the 13th flash tattoos, a Subciety takeover, more free dabs from thisthat, and THC-infused cocktails. Wunder is also bringing complimentary mushroom gummy samples to the night. The lineup features Chappie Funk, OldGold, Wu-Tsu, and Director—underground selectors brought in by Subciety, a collective focused on sound, culture, and community that’s putting some of the best emerging artists on bigger stages.

Saturday is Indica Interludes, a curated, all-male Hip-Hop and R&B showcase running from 2 pm to 5 pm at Cozy. The vibe is smooth and low-stress, built for people who want to chill before the night picks up. The first 50 guests get a free custom engraved smoking accessory: find in-house engraver Steph, pick your accessory, and choose your engraving to claim it. THC-infused cocktails and flower specials are running all afternoon. The full lineup is CODEE, Pierce Washington, and headliner Aaron Page, with sounds by Vintage Jay and Thomasthesquare.

Sunday brings SUNHAZE, an all-women’s showcase presented by NORF NORF and Cozy Cannabis featuring Suhni, Amali, Lil Yanna Marie, and Moody Bank$ with sound by Shells, plus Lucy’s Pre-Rolls on deck. Lucy’s is also running a BLING Your Own Lighter station. Stop by, bedazzle your lighter, and pick up a free pre-roll when you buy one at the Cozy counter. The concept behind the event is rooted in contemplation and music as healing, with each performer offering a different window into that experience.

Tuesday (if you’re still standing) brings a LOVPUNE DJ set and flower specials for St. Patrick’s Day. The dress code is simple: wear green, get green.

For anyone attending Austin Texas SXSW this March, Cozy Cannabis is home to the festival’s best off-the-grid moments. No badge required for these events, just show up.

Getting into the SXSW festival in Austin Texas is more straightforward this year than it’s been in a while. Here’s what you need to know:

Dates: March 12-18, 2026, Austin, Texas

Badges: Four types: Platinum (full access to everything), Innovation, Film & TV, and Music. Badge prices have been lowered for 2026, and Platinum’s earliest prices are now more accessible than before.

New reservation system: Every badge now includes advance reservations to secure your spot in sessions, screenings, and showcases up to three weeks before the festival. Platinum gets three reservations per day; Innovation, Film & TV, and Music badges get two per day each. Reservations are released in windows by badge type, so you’ll have a fresh batch available when your window opens. Walk-up lines still exist for everything.

Music Wristband add-on: If you’re coming primarily for Innovation or Film & TV but want to hit shows, you can now add a Music Wristband at checkout rather than needing a separate badge. Limited General Admission film tickets are also available one week before the festival for those who want to add screenings.

Plan your week: Download the SXSW GO app and check the official Attendee Guide before you arrive. The schedule is deep, and the city is spread out—going in without a rough plan means you’ll spend more time figuring out logistics than actually doing things.

Stay updated: Speakers, showcasing artists, and screenings are still being announced. Follow SXSW on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Bluesky for rolling announcements between now and March.

The companies that present here become household names. The films that screen here win awards. Cozy Cannabis is part of the scene this March. Find them, enjoy responsibly, and make it a week worth remembering. Head to SXSW.com for full badge info, the schedule, and everything else you need to plan your trip.
