If you’re lucky enough to be traveling the world or happen to be in the same region, make sure to visit the following five cannabis museums that might be of more interest to you than the typical tourist stops.

Now in its fourth decade, the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum in Amsterdam is the oldest museum to be dedicated to cannabis, which is also located in the Red Light District.

Opening in 1985, the museum (originally named the Hash Info Museum) was forced to close a day later by orders of the Minister of Justice, but its founder, Ben Dronkers, challenged the closure of his museum and was able to reopen it within a week.

The Spanish museum is located in the Palau Mornau, a national monument in Barcelona (so you could say that this museum doesn’t exactly slip under the radar).

Like its Dutch counterpart, the museum will not only educate you on the cultivation and consumption of cannabis but also explain how it was used in ancient rituals and its place in modern medicine.

While New Zealand was at the forefront of women’s suffrage, the country still falls behind so many other countries as it still sees cannabis as an offense. But the Whakamana Cannabis Museum is trying to remedy that, as a center for education on cannabis and law reform activism.

Based in Dunedin, home of New Zealand’s world-renowned Otago University, the museum is the perfect opportunity to get a firsthand experience at the university’s 420 sessions. And, hey, what other museum offers a place to stay?

4. Hemp Embassy, Austria

The Hemp Embassy’s mission statement says it best: it wants to help raise awareness about what the debate over cannabis is really about, which is the inflorescences of the cannabis plant.

The Hemp Embassy allows people to see the plant for themselves. That’s right, the Embassy grows plants in-house, which hasn’t been easy for the Austrian museum (resulting in several searches and conditional prison sentences for the “curators”). Best of all, it doesn’t cost a cent to visit.

How many museums do you know that have been raided by the federal government? Well, the Oaksterdam Cannabis Museum can claim that, as it has been raided, but it is business as usual for the Oakland icon.

Focusing on the use of industrial hemp, medicinal marijuana, and cannabis culture, the Oaksterdam Cannabis Museum is open every Friday, from 2 pm to 8 pm.
