70s Record Store Licorice Pizza Records Is Reopening Shop In Studio City

The beloved record store is back in Southern California, and this time, it's permanent.

Last year, a new movie by director Paul Thomas Anderson held a familiar name that tied into a Long Beach-based record store in the 70s. Yes, we’re talking about the historic Licorice Pizza Records.

For starters, Licorice Pizza Records was founded in 1969, and throughout the 70s, it expanded with an additional 34 locations throughout Southern California. In the 2021 film Licorice Pizza, PT Anderson presented us with a playful coming-of-age film highlighting life in the 70s in Southern California.

While the movie was a hit, gaining a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, some viewers felt like Anderson didn’t properly pay tribute to Licorice Pizza Records, nor were there any follow-up announcements that the record store might open back up because of the hype. Finally, however, we have some good news.

As per LA Weekly, Studio City will soon have a unique boutique shop in the spirit of Licorice Pizza Records, which will carry vinyl records, vintage apparel, merch, and other collectibles. And SoCal residents can trust that the record store is here to stay this time around.

In honor of Landmark Theather’s week of 70mm screenings, it decided to keep the nostalgia at a high and launch a new temporary pop-up Licorice Pizza Records. During the week-long event, guests also participated in Q&As with director and writer PT Anderson and editor Andy Jurgensen.

The Landmark Theaters pop-up store also had themed pinball machines, a room with DJs bumping nostalgic tunes, and other items that were reminiscent of 70s SoCal culture.

The pop-up was wildly busy during the week-long event, and although it captured the essence of what Licorice Pizza Records is all about, the permanent brick-and-mortar shop in Studio City will carry the reputation for years to come.
