Time to take out your shisha because one California company just released a cannabis hookah mixture that won't irritate the throat.
Anyone can agree that a relaxing hookah sesh with friends never gets old, but what about smoking hookah in the desert, and instead of a tobacco mix, it’s cannabis?
While this might seem like a pretty distinct and random setting, it was High Desert’s dream come true to merge the worlds of hookah and cannabis with refreshing imagery and connections to the Californian deserts. The company took notice of the many cannabis connoisseurs trying to use dried flower with this centuries-old Middle Eastern smoking device and decided to come up with a solution.
But there was a problem. Smoking cannabis with a hookah often results in harsh, scratchy hits since most shisha mixtures require a sticky and damp texture. With this in mind, High Desert’s co-founders wanted to create something that still pays tribute to traditional Middle Eastern culture but also bridges the gap between cannabis and the refreshing great outdoors.
Aside from High Desert, the team behind the brand has a background in developing and manufacturing hookahs. In fact, Rolling Stone reported Drake smoking a hookah decorated in LED lights created by one of High Desert’s co-founders.

Wanting to make shisha more inclusive and invite other cultures to join in, High Desert emphasizes that it should be a global act. And when paired with cannabis, it can offer a unique microdosing effect that aligns with the cannabis industry’s many micro-dosed edibles, strains, and tinctures. Shisha has also long been a part of spiritual and wellness rituals, and the brand felt that modernizing the act could appeal to a broader audience.
After launching in 2021, High Desert was born and quickly created its cannabis hookah mixture for weed lovers to enjoy. The mixture is available throughout California and features a proprietary mix of tiny cannabis buds, trimmings, and a molasses mixture to give it that sticky and wet texture for hookah use.
Both founders fell in love with the vast California deserts and would often hike through rugged trails just to reach a peak, set up their hookahs, and enjoy the view. With designs inspired by the Joshua Tree desert reminiscent of serene sessions with loved ones, High Desert is truly a dream come true.
