The California State Fair will now be holding its first-ever cannabis competition to celebrate the state’s legal licensed cannabis industry.
The competition invites all licensed growers in California and will place them into three classified sections amongst entry: Indoor, Mixed Light, and Outdoor. Don’t get your hopes up; this isn’t a “who can get the most high” or “who can smoke the fattest joint to the face” competition, more so a celebration of the flower itself.
According to fair organizers, the competition will present medals to plants based on seven individual plant compounds that will be tested and identified for awards. There are 77 bronze, silver, gold, and double gold medals to be awarded at the fair, including the Golden Bear trophy for “Best of California.” All will be awarded based on their levels of cannabinoid and terpene concentration.
Cultivar Brands CEO Brian Applegarth had this to say on the subject, “The launch of state-sanctioned awards is a watershed moment for the Californian cannabis industry. Not only will we showcase the California farmer, large and small, and the incredible cannabis flower that the state has to offer, but we will educate and demystify the plant, challenge the stereotypes and continue to evolve towards normalcy.”
The state fair will be held at Cal Expo Fairgrounds in Sacramento from July 10th until July 26th, 2022. The submission window opens soon, on November 1st, and will close on March 30th, 2022. Winners will be announced in May 2022.
