As the #FreeBritney movement exposed Spears’ conservatorship and abusive experience with her father Jamie Spears, 69, fans might be able to reap the rewards and have an independent Britney sooner than later.
After 13 years of extensive control over Britney’s finances and private life, father Jamie Spears has finally offered to stand down from his role as conservator. Jamie’s lawyer told the court, “The public does not know all the facts, and they have no right to know.”
Conservatorships are generally used for those unable to make their own decisions, which led Jamie Spears to the agreement during Britney’s 2008 high-profile crises. It wasn’t until this summer that Spears herself opened up about her thoughts of the conservatorship during two powerful court hearings in Los Angeles.
After stating that the experience was “abusive,” Spears followed up by saying that she was forced to go be birth control against her will. At the same time, her father denied the allegations and mentioned that he would only act in his daughter’s best interest.
At the case’s next hearing on September 29th, a petition to remove Mr. Spears from his role will be heard. Although there are many opinions and sides to this story, it’s up to Judge Brenda Penny to decide if Britney Spears’ conservatorship will finally come to an end.
Spears recently hired esteemed and high-powered lawyer Matthew Rosengart, who promises to put an end to the conservatorship once and for all.
